Outfit of the Day: Spider-Gwen

These are some photos that I took (and edited) last fall but I still hadn’t posted for some reason unbeknownst to me (actually now that I’m thinking of it, I took these photos the day of Melissa’s going away party when she moved back to Texas T.T).  Since my second tpb of Spider-Gwen arrived yesterday I thought I would get on releasing these<3 I think everyone knows that Spider-Gwen is essentially my comic dream come true (thanks again Dan!) so I’ve purchased just about every Spider-Gwen article of clothing that WeLoveFine has had to offer.  Even more exciting is that completely out of nowhere, my friend Eric asked for my address because he had a surprise for me… custom painted Spider-Gwen converse sneakers!!!!  I was DYING when he sent me photos of them and I couldn’t believe how lucky I was that he thought of me!  Each side of the shoes has a different design and I love them so much! To be honest, I’m super scared to wear them unless it’s a REALLY special occasion because I would be DEVASTATED if anything were to happen to them! I love that Eric even went so far as to customize the box!  I decided to put together this everyday outfit complete with a Gwen Stacy headband and show off my best web hands.  In other news, today is my first official day off for my wedding! I have some last minute appointments today and some crafting stuff to take care of and then I’ll be rewarding myself with a hot cup of tea while I savor every page of DC Rebirth!

Fangirl Fashions {The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy Blog Tour & Guest Post by Sam Maggs}

I’m so excited to have Sam Maggs here on the blog today with a guest post about Fangirl fashions in honor of her new book which debuted earlier this week, The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy.  I’ll be posting a full review later in the month, but I can tell you right now that Sam’s book is an absolute MUST READ for all Fangirls.  She covers topics like cosplay, feminism, fanfic and most importantly, how to beat internet trolls.  Also, IT’S SO PRETTY.  I showed off the inside cover of the book during my April Book Haul and May TBR videos and I still cannot get over how gorgeous this book is.  (Sam actually interviewed me and my best friend Melissa for the book and she posted our advice on the QuirkBooks blog last week!)

Favorite Fangirl Fashions

We might still be asking #WheresNatasha, but there’s no doubt that life for a fashionable fangirl has gotten a lot easier lately. Gone are the days of being relegated to wearing oversized men’s shirts with boring prints; thanks to some innovative and brilliant women, we’ve got clothing for every shape and size lady fan. Here are some of my very favorite fangirl fashions!

Her Universe

Started by Ashley Eckstein (who you might know better as Ahsoka Tano), Her Universe carries clothes from Star Trek to Star Wars, Doctor Who, Marvel, and more. They offer a wide range of sizes, so you never have to worry about fit, and their items are incredibly well-made. Plus, Ashley is an absolute delight and truly cares about female fans more than anyone else I know.

Her Universe
Favorite Item: The TARDIS Cardigan.

WeLoveFine

WLF is a huge online retailer that has really stepped up for lady fans. When everyone else was flaking out after Ultron, WLF came out with their very own line of items for girls who love the Avengers (and who doesn’t?). They also sell items for fans of Adventure Time, Bee & Puppycat, Bravest Warriors, Marvel, Jem, Lumberjanes, and even The Mary Sue!

WMV3040MZY1_CAPTAIN_MARVEL-_SWEATER_MODEL2-1000x1000

Favorite Item: The Captain Marvel Sweater.

Hot Topic

Whoa, yes, I know you haven’t shopped here since your goth phase in high school (it’s cool, we all had one). But seriously, you need to go back, because they are all about fandoms these days. They have some great Sailor Moon merch, but my two favorite lines from them right now are Penny Dreadful and Orphan Black. I need it all.

Favorite Item: The Penny Dreadful Scorpion Print Dress

GoldBubble

A super-small company run by two fans, GoldBubble is the best competitor to BlackMilk out there – and they really care about their fans, too. I have a great pair of Han Solo leggings from these guys, and so does my mom – they fit all different fangirls! They sometimes put out super limited edition items (like a BB8 dress for Star Wars Day) so keep an eye on their site.

BoredALineFront_1024x1024

Favorite Item: The Sherlock-inspired Bored A-Line Dress

Espionage Cosmetics

Your nails have to look good too, right ladies? This adorable company based in Seattle makes nail wraps for basically every fandom, and they’re super easy to use – just peel, stick, file, and you’re good to go (though I like to seal mine with a top coat). To make them last longer, pick up a humidor and stick your extra wraps in there they’ll last ages! They also have eyeshadows and lipsticks on offer too, so check it all out.

Favorite Item: Borderlands The Pre-Sequel Glitter Nail Wraps

Did I miss your favorite fangirl fashion? Let me know in the comments or on Twitter @SamMaggs!

Comics, Desserts, Hobbits & Cartoons

I’ve been itching to get into a better blogging routine for posting more on SuperSpaceChick since it’s my personal site and I have some of the most fun writing things here than I do any other place.  I’ve already been plotting some really exciting things with The Nerdy Girlie and I cannot wait to debut our new idea to all our blogger friends out there on the interwebz!  I’m sure we’ll even make some new ones in the process :-D  But, since this has been one whirlwind of an eventful week, I thought I’d share all of the wonderful things that’ve been happening in my first foray back into blogging!

It’s been a very slow moving process for me to bring all of my beloved collectibles, books, comics, and other assorted treasures to my new home.  I moved into an apartment in Brooklyn in May with my good friend Taylor and my new friend Emma.  Since then, it’s been weekend after weekend of my wonderfully supportive family and boyfriend Andrew driving from my old Long Island home to my new place and carrying heavy bag after heavy bag of graphic novels, shoes, statues, video games, books, and more up several flights of stairs and into my bright pink room.  In the last batch of packed items I hauled some of my favorite comfort graphic novels since I had previously tried to fill my shelves with things I have yet to read.  Since I have less space here it’s been quite a project to prioritize and determine which things I want to have here and which collectibles should be displayed.  One of my creative ways to display more toys was to prop my TV set up on several art books so I could place my Star Wars themed Disney Vinylmations in front of the set without blocking the picture.  It’s kind of funny to think that I’ve been trying to de-clutter my online life (another project this week was to unfriend anyone on Facebook that isn’t a close personal friend, a family member, or someone I communicate with regularly online), while trying to maximize the clutter in my real life.

IMG_9238While I’m on the subject of comics, SPIDER-GWEN came out last week and it was literally one of the best moments of my life.  It’s part of the Spider-Verse story arc and it takes place in an alternate dimension where Gwen Stacy was bitten by a spider and becomes Spider-Woman.  Even more exciting than this is that Gwen is awesome.  She’s the drummer in a band called The Mary Janes with Mary Jane Watson as the lead vocalist.  Their hit song is fittingly titled Face It Tiger and there’s already a band that recorded their interpretation of the song!  It has a punk feel which totally fits the story.  I love the father/daughter dynamic of the story between Gwen and Captain Stacy and I really really really hope Marvel sees all of the positive feedback they’ve been getting and the pleading so many of us have done online for a Spider-Gwen ongoing series.  Gwen has always been my favorite Marvel lady for Peter Parker.  They’re my OTP.  To see Gwen in this one issue (and ASM #9) is a dream come true.  The variant cover even looks exactly like yours truly!

photoLately I’ve been on a major Disney kick.  I think it all began when I saw that Disney came out with a second wave of their beautiful fairytale collection mugs.  I have the Tangled mug from the first collection which I purchased after admiring Megan’s.  I remember how quickly they sold out of stores so a few hours after my discovery I speed walked over to the Disney Store in Times Square on my lunch break and I picked up the Aurora mug.  I also bought my first Tsum Tsum, Minnie, and she is just precious.  Shortly after that, Betty told me about the Tsum Tsum game that I could play on my iPhone, and let’s just say that Andrew has mentioned the word intervention more than once since I made my account.  It’s a really fast paced 60 second game where you have to connect as many of the same Tsum Tsum’s as possible.  The more points and coins you accrue, the more Tsum Tsum’s you can purchase and the higher level you’ll achieve.  It’s also fun because several of my other friends play too and we send each other hearts every chance we get!  Then on Saturday night Andrew agreed to have a Disney movie marathon with me.  We decided to watch The Little Mermaid, my personal favorite, and Frozen, my second favorite.  The marathon also included Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter Core Ice Cream which is just heavenly and brings us to the dessert and food portion of my post.  (Sleeping Beauty is coming out on blu-ray in October, so we’re going to fit that into our viewing schedule as soon as we get a copy too!)

It’s been big few weeks of desserts for me.  I’ve always had a sweet tooth and I’ve been trying my hardest to eat really healthy during the week for breakfast and lunch, that way I don’t feel as bad about indulging in some sugary sweets later on in the day.  The first photo, which may look like an ordinary Starbucks cup, is full of one of my seasonal favorites, the Pumpkin Spice latte.  I know it’s a thing that everyone makes fun of, and it’s even worse that I instagrammed it, but I love Pumpkin Spice everything and I’m not ashamed to admit it!  If it was offered throughout the year, I would buy even more of it than I do now, even though Andrew is convinced that I’m a victim of limited time marketing, but I’ll post more on that later.  We also found that Trader Joe’s, our go-to dinner source, made an ice cream version of Cookie Butter!  It’s vanilla ice cream with cookie butter inside and it’s just as delicious as it sounds.  The next photo are of some Battlestar Galactica cupcakes I baked a few weekends ago.  Andrew and I have been binge watching the series to the extreme and I felt inspired.  And when we’re not watching Starbuck, Adama, Helo, Apollo and the rest of the gang aboard Galactica, we’ve been having our regular weekend routine of Sunday pizza and video game day.  We’re currently in the middle of BioShock!  Andrew and I also stopped at my favorite cupcakery in NYC, Georgetown Cupcakes, to pick up a box to bring home and consume during tea time with my parents.  I love trying their monthly flavors and I’m really looking forward to when Gingerbread returns.  One of the most exciting things I’ve done this week is that I FINALLY tried a cronut.  And not just any cronut, a coffee creme filled cronut.  It was scrumptious!  I’ve never been a huge fan of donuts, however, I am a big advocator of croissants.  I also had a macaron brownie which is basically a macaron half dipped in chocolate and wedged in between a rich chocolate brownie.  All of this sugary goodness was eaten at Paris Baguette with Leonard and Andrew, where we also debated the number of times Gallifrey was shown on Doctor Who, discusses Peter Capaldi’s attack eyebrows, and complained relentlessly about how Clara needs to go.  Another new thing I tried is the Lazy Sunday ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s.  There are cupcakes bits inside it and I developed very strong feelings about it within the first few bites.  Lastly, a Smashburger was recently opened in NYC and since I used to love going there during lunch at my old job with my friends, I suggested that Andrew and I head there for dinner.  My favorite item on their menu is the Nutter Butter shake.  I also got an Avocado Ranch Black Bean Burger (vegetarian), and veggie fries which I like to think are healthier than regular french fries, but probably not.

Since I started working at my new job, I am no longer allowed to dress casually.  This has meant that I’ve been purchasing and wearing an influx of geeky jewelry so I can still feel like myself from 9-5.  Some of my new favorites are this Groot necklace by Red Dingo Designs on Etsy and this Hobbit Hole necklace that was fashioned after Bag End.  I wore my Hobbit necklace most of last week because I am so excited for my future Lord of the Rings plans.  My wonderful boyfriend Andrew got tickets for us to see the full LOTR trilogy screened with a live orchestra at Lincoln Center next April.  The event takes place over three separate nights and I’m going to be decked out in all the Tolkien things every single performance.  Now the only question is how I’m going to be able to wait until next April!

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Luckily I still have the weekend to exercise the fun part of my wardrobe!  I decided to wear my LSP skater dress by Black Milk on Saturday for my Grandma’s 75th surprise party.  I accessorized with my glittery LSP necklace, House of Harlow fringe earrings, a ton of bracelets, my Batman ring, and my favorite pair of Jeffrey Campbell wedge boots.  Oh my glob did I feel great!  I was almost as tall as Andrew!  Then this morning I was feeling very magical girl and I decided to wear my Pinkie Moon t-shirt from WeLoveFine.  It’s a mash up of Sailor Moon and My Little Pony which seemed appropriate since Andrew and I were going to a movie theater in Williamsburg to watch cartoons.  I accessorized with my Artemis ring and my Moon Stick necklace, both of which were purchased on Etsy.  You also get a sneak peek of my bookshelf in this photo!  I’m going to be doing a more in depth post about my new room once I feel like I have it decorated to my hearts desire.

So, as I mentioned above, there’s a wonderful indie cinema in Brooklyn called NiteHawk Cinema.  They hold a monthly event called Spoons, Toons, and Booze and it’s one of the most fun events I’ve ever been too.  I’m definitely going to go back next month, and I’m crossing my fingers that it’ll be Halloween themed.  There’s an all you can eat cereal bar included in your ticket price.  I munched on Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, Golden Grahams, Fruit Loops, and a peanut butter Jif cereal from Canada while Andrew’s cereals of choice included Cocoa Puffs and Oops All Berries.  There’s also a separate menu you can order from if you want other brunch foods, and there’s a menu of cocktails as well.  I had a black tea and lemon iced drink that was infused with vodka.  They also offer cereal shots, in which you mix a shot of Baileys or Kahlua with milk and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.  And the best part of the whole ordeal is that all of this food is served while you watch Saturday morning cartoons on a big screen.  There’s always a theme (this month’s was Rock and Roll), and the audience votes on which cartoons they watch.  In my session we viewed Garfield, Hey Arnold!, Rocko’s Modern Life, and Animaniacs. Afterwards, we walked along the Williamsburg Waterfront and admired the view of what we could see of the New York City skyline in the fog.  Then on our way back to my apartment we came across this beautiful graffiti!

And the last paragraph in this incredibly long post is dedicated to my favorite things I wrote this past week for On Wednesdays We Wear Pink.  We’ve been updating our site with 6-9 articles per day and I’m so proud of how much content we’ve been putting out but I’ve narrowed it down to my favorite posts.

NYCC ’13: My Favorite Moments

Sorry I’m so far behind on writing my NYCC recap.  Things have been insanely busy since our Fangasm premiere, but I wanted to share all of the wonderful moments I had at this year’s convention.  NYCC is one of my favorite cons because it’s in my home territory.  It’s the one time of year that all of my friends fly to me to visit and gather at the Javits Center because of our shared love of superheroes and such.  This year was an exceptionally exciting year for me.  I can’t even begin to tell you how heartwarming it was to be approached by so many people who had seen and loved Fangasm.  The entire reason I decided to be on the show is because I love the geek community, and I always want to encourage a positive, happy, outlook on our industry, so having so many people tell me that our show inspired them makes me feel even better about my whole experience.  Thank you to everyone who approached Molly, Regina, Sal and I and shared your fandom stories.  You really made our convention a memorable one :-)

We started our day on Thursday by meeting up with one my favorite geek girls, Ashley Eckstein of Her Universe & Clone Wars.  Ashley has always been a role model of mine.  She’s a driven business woman, and she’s also one of the nicest people I’ve ever met.  I love what she has done for geek girl fashion, and I wear her clothes all the time!  After seeing Ashley, the rest of the Fangasm crew and I headed to the Diamond booth where we held a meet and greet for anyone who wanted to come say hi to us!  I also got to see Chris (the amazingly talented designer of this very website!), and Stephanie, who did me a huge favor and brought my custom made Nightwing dress by Suckers Apparel so I could wear it the next day.  I wish I could’ve hung out with them for longer, but this convention, I was constantly on the move.  Next we went to the Stan Lee Collectibles booth and we were given the exclusive Funko Stan Lee New York Comic Con Pop vinyl figures!  Mine is currently sitting next to me on my desk and watching me write this recap (and probably silently judging me for not posting it sooner).  Afterwards we wandered around the show floor for a little longer and then we met up with Melissa and Christine and it was off to the Mary Sue Bash!  When we first got there I finally met my long time internet friend Janna and her fiancé Mike, in real life for the first time ever!  I also finally had a brief chance to catch up with Jill (one of the lovely hosts!), Rachael, Marlene, Amy, EricAlanLisa, and Ali, but not nearly long enough.  We actually arrived on time (for once), and we ate delicious popcorn, waited anxiously as the raffle winners were announced, and played with superhero props, all the while drinking Strong Female Characters and Wonder Woman Movies which were cocktails that were custom designed for the party.  I also was able to meet two more internet friends of mine, Sam Maggs, who was such a sweetheart, and Nicole who works for WeLoveFine!  All in all, the Mary Sue Bash was an absolute blast!

IMG_9616 IMG_9622 IMG_9627IMG_9680

After the previous nights festivities, Molly, Sal, Regina and I had kind of a late start on Friday morning.  We spent a few hours lounging in our incredibly luxurious mod hotel room, gossiping and reminiscing about memories from our time we spent filming Fangasm.  But once we made it to the convention, we had another action packed day of photos with Fangasm viewers, and we also did our best to walk around the show floor.  I was able to buy an adorable Sailor Scout tank from WeLoveFine, and then I headed to one of my favorite places, the BOOM/Archaia booth to 1) get a hug from Mel and 2) pick up the first volume of Mouse Guard (which I’ve been dying to read) and the NYCC exclusive Robocop #1 variant as well as the Robocop trade based on Frank Miller’s original vision for the film.  While I was roaming around, I was able to meet the awesome Clayton Cowles for the first time!  He, Melissa, and I have a mission to plan a Terminator Christmas, but since we were too busy this NYCC, it will definitely have to happen in the near future.  One of the highlights of the day was meting Jonathan London and listening to his psychoanalysis of Bruce Wayne.  After the con, Molly, Regina, Sal and I went to Burgers and Cupcakes for dinner, picked up pie, and spent the night drinking champagne in our hotel room and meeting with Stan Lee’s team of people.

Saturday was probably my favorite day of the convention.  On Saturday morning, I made Regina and Sal wake up really early and head to convention with me so we could be there when the doors opened.  Why, you ask?  BECAUSE I HAD TO HAVE A ROCKET RACCOON PLUSH.  The line at the Marvel booth was constantly unbearable, but we met Leonard there and put in our line waiting time for over 45 minutes, and then Rocket Raccoon was all mine<3  Leonard also got me the Skottie Young Avengers movie poster print, signed by Skottie himself!  Just as we finished paying I ran into Dan who happened to be signing at the Marvel booth in just a short time, and who I almost didn’t recognize because he was fully bearded.  I’m so excited about the new Silver Surfer series he’s creating with Mike Allred!  Then we headed downstairs to one of the meeting rooms and Sal and I got to sit in and listen to some of Regina’s Comikaze business dealings which was extremely interesting.  Then Molly met us, and we went back to the Diamond Booth for more meet and greets, and business meetings!  Molly and I purchased our NYCC exclusive Poison Ivy’s which match our Super Best Friends Forever set from SDCC, and I ran into Lauren who was perfectly cosplaying as Catwoman.  I wish I had gotten a photo with her.  Afterwards, which was one of the most exciting con moments for me, we were able to see Stan Lee again.  Stan is such a charmer.  We thanked him for letting us take a photo with him and he commented that he could never be surrounded by too many beautiful women.  Then I finally had some free time where I was able to meet up with my best friends (minus Melissa), and do one of my favorite con activities, which is sitting in one spot on the floor for hours.  Conventions are very crowded, so if you don’t take some time to sit and spectate you’ll use up all of your energy before you get to attend any of the fun after parties.  I did my floor sitting with Cassie, Giovanni, Betty, Lauren, and our friend Tom who was working for Marvel visited us twice in the six hours we remained in our same spot.  After the show closed Giovanni, Tom, Athena, Lindsay, Jessy, Dan, and I went to Korea Town for some delicious sushi.  Then it was back to my hotel room to get ready for the Marvel party!  I got to catch up with Judy who I met the previous year at a BlackMilk meetup, and I spent the remainder of my night talking to Tom, Athena, Clayton, and Ramon Perez.  Another good night, indeed!

IMG_9661 IMG_9665 IMG_9782

Sunday morning, Regina left us to head back to LA, and Molly, Sal and I walked to the Javits to enjoy our last day.  The first thing I did was attend the Comix Chix panel which Molly, Jill, and Heidi were speaking on, as well as some other ladies I love.  After the panel I met Bonnie and Kate who are both super adorable and very inspiring!  My good friend Leonard also completely surprised me and made my entire year when he gave me a Nintendo 3DS XL in pink!  I was in shock!  I have been wanting one forever, and I am ever so thankful for his kind gesture, especially since there are so many upcoming games I’m dying to play!  Once the panel ended Jill and I spent the day walking the show floor and picking up the last minute things we had been wanting.  One booth I was really impressed with  was Hallmark.  I couldn’t believe that I was seeing so many geeky Christmas ornaments that are debuting this year.  I’m definitely planning on getting the Adventure Time, Spider-Man, and Star Wars ones once they hit stores.  My only purchase of the day was Mind MGMT Volume 2 by Matt Kindt.  If you’re not yet reading the series, I seriously suggest that you start.  It’s beautiful and completely unlike what I had been expecting.  While we were in the Dark Horse booth, Jill introduced to me Aub Driver, who was insanely energetic for the fourth day of the convention, as well as insanely awesome.  I’m also thrilled that I was able to meet Dean Trippe in person.  Dean and I have been friends for quite some time now, and he’s an incredibly talented writer and artist who just released an autobiographical comic called Something Terrible which you can read for only 99 cents!  He gave me a poster of what I refer to as his masterpiece (and the current background of my computer).  Then, just as quickly as the convention came, it was all over.  Giovanni and I ended our NYCC by going out for pizza so we could unwind and attempt to mentally prepare ourselves for rejoining the real world.  My only regret is that I didn’t have any time to go to Artist Alley.  Thank goodness I stocked up on prints at Baltimore Comic Con!

And now for a few more photos! The adorable custom Gwen Stacy LEGO figure was made for me by Jon, and the stylish Vader cameo ring was made for me by Pattie!

The Fashion of FANGASM: Episode One

One of my favorite things about being a geek nowadays is that by spending countless hours perusing the internet, I’m able to find the most adorable items of clothing that incorporate my favorite fandoms.  I’m really into the idea of everyday cosplay and I almost always dress according to a theme of a favorite book, movie, or tv show I’m currently obsessing over!  Here are some of my favorite outfits that I wore on the first episode of Fangasm, and the details on where you can buy them!

Screen Shot 2013-09-25 at 12.29.05 AMFirst up!  When we’re all arriving to our internship at Stan Lee’s Comikaze I decided to wear my Her Universe Dalek dress.  It’s such a flattering fit and the color really pops!  I love that although it’s fitted, it’s still really comfortable due to the cotton/spandex blend.  You can grab your own from Ashley’s online Her Universe shop for $35!

Next up is my Captain Marvel tank from WeLove Fine! I was so in love with this Carol Danvers tank that I wrote a blog post all about it on the website Kristin Fowler and I run called On Wednesdays We Wear Pink.  As of right now, WeLoveFine appears to be out of stock on my tank, but in the meantime I highly suggest checking out this fantastic Ms. Marvel tee! I’ve been eyeing it for quite some time now.

Screen Shot 2013-09-25 at 12.55.33 AMWhen Paul surprised us and brought George Takei back to our house, the rest of us roommates had been lounging around and eating ice cream sundaes.  I was wearing one of my favorite pairs of Black Milk leggings, the Mechanical leggings, which remind me of a cyborg.  Whenever I wear them I can’t stop staring at my legs!

If there are any outfits I’ve left out of my blog post, feel free to comment and ask about them and I’ll be sure to tell you where you can find them!
