Waiting on Wednesday: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Illustrated Edition by J.K. Rowling & Jim Kay

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly series hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases we’re eagerly awaiting.  This week I’m choosing the illustrated Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K Rowling, illustrated by Jim Kay.  I was basically squealing when the next cover was revealed on BuzzFeed last week and I have to say that I love it even more than the first.  I love the color contrast of the title against the beautiful blue sky, the gryffindor scarf blowing in the wind and the design of The Burrow as Harry and the Weasley’s arrive after escaping the Dursley’s.  The book will be available on October 4th and I think I can speak for every Harry Potter fan when I say I NEED TO GET MY HANDS ON THIS ASAP.

All Harry Potter wants is to get away from the Dursleys and go back to Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he’s packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature named Dobby – who says that if Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike.

And strike it does. For in Harry’s second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor, Gilderoy Lockheart, a spirit named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls’ bathroom, and the unwanted attentions of Ron Weasley’s younger sister, Ginny.

But each of these seem minor annoyances when the real trouble begins, and someone–or something–starts turning Hogwarts students to stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy, a more poisonous rival than ever? Could it possibly be Hagrid, whose mysterious past is finally told? Or could it be the one everyone at Hogwarts most suspects… Harry Potter himself. (via Goodreads)

History is Happening in the Wizarding World

The past week has been overflowing with Harry Potter news and this Ravenclaw couldn’t feel more lucky to be alive right now!  I’m going to list my favorite news first because everyone has heard it by now and I’m already planning which bookstore I want to go to for the midnight release so I can feel like I’m in high school again.  From books to toys there’s just so much report so I’ll get to it:

Screen Shot 2016-02-13 at 5.22.40 PM

This is the most exciting news since it’s a new story set in the Harry Potter world!  Ever since Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was announced I had been praying that the show would find it’s way to NYC because really, how could I possibly survive in life without knowing everything about my favorite world?  The answer is, I probably couldn’t.  Luckily, for everyone who isn’t able to make it to London, Scholastic (or Little Brown if you’re in the UK) will be releasing a book of the full script!  Apparently there’s some confusion online but Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is NOT a prequel.  It takes place 19 years AFTER the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  I love that it’s being released on July 31st for Harry’s birthday<3  Because it’s being printed so soon, the first version of this book is the Rehearsed Edition script and once it’s finalized, a new version of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be released, entitled the Definitive Collector’s Edition (in typical Potter fashion since publisher’s know us Potterheads will spend all of our money on new editions).

Speaking of special editions… the 20 year anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is coming up in 2017 and to celebrate, Bloomsbury will be releasing Special Hogwarts House editions of the first book.  My thoughts: WHERE CAN I PREORDER MY PRECIOUS RAVENCLAW THEMED TOME?!

As I’m sure you’re aware, the movie adaptation of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (which JK Rowling is penning the script for) is being released later this year.  Bloomsbury has announced that they’ll be releasing an updated hardback version of the textbook on February 9th, 2017 (woo less than year!) which will include new content from JK Rowling in the form of an introduction.  They’ve also just given a teaser for the cover (above) and announced that Jonny Duddle will be the cover illustrator.  You may recognize Duddle’s work because he also illustrated all of the new Potter covers in 2014.

Yes, there’s more!  You know that beautiful Harry Potter Illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone?  Well, we’re about to get illustrated versions of the Hogwarts Library books as well (which include Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – Autumn 2017, The Tales of the Beedle Bard  – 2018 and Quidditch Through the Ages – 2019).  I’m going to need an entire bookshelf dedicated solely to HP. This is not a complaint.

This weekend Toy Fair is taking place at the Javits Center in NYC and Funko had a ton of Potter reveals to share! I’m thrilled to say that my dream of a Hogwarts Express Funko has been realized.  Unfortunately, there’s no official release date just yet but at least these are in our near future!  I love that the Mystery Minis line includes animals! I never thought I would say this but Voldemort is pretty cute in this line! And can we just about how Ron is holding a Chocolate Frog and Hermione is clutching a book? I’m in love!  Images of the toys below were released exclusively on Mugglenet.

And right before Toy Fair, Funko announced the exclusive Harry Potter Funkos that’ll be available during the second wave.  My favorites are the Hot Topic exclusives which include Draco in his Quidditch robes and Cedric Diggory in his Triwizard outfit *sobs.*  The other two Pops, Harry Potter in the Sorting Hat and Neville Longbottom will be exclusive to Barnes and Noble.

BookTube: Favorite Harry Potter Illustrated Edition Artwork

Today I wanted to share a video about my favorite illustrations in the newly released Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone illustrated edition.  In case you haven’t heard me raving about it in past videos, Scholastic is releasing a new and fully illustrated Harry Potter book each year, allowing us all to relive our childhoods.  Since many people already own the series, I thought it would be fun to share some of the best artwork in the book to help people decide whether they need to buy the series again (spoiler alert, you do).

The Marvels By Brian Selznick Sneak Peek & GIVEAWAY

I am so beyond excited to be part of the teaser tour for Brian Selznick’s third novel, The Marvels.  I absolutely ADORED his previous work The Invention of Hugo Cabret and I cannot wait to dive into his latest book.  Just like his previous novels, The Marvels includes the beautifully sketched artwork Selznick is known for but this time he’s doing it a little bit different.  The Marvels actually tells two stories, the first is over 400 pages and is told exclusively through illustrations and the second is told through prose but we’re pretty certain those stories will interconnect.  The first takes place in 1776 and follows Billy Marvel who is the sole survivor in a shipwreck aboard The Kraken. He becomes involved in a theater in London where generations of his family star in a plethora of Shakespeare plays.  The second story take place in 1990 and follows a young runaway named Joseph Jervis who travels to his uncle’s home in London and begins searching through his uncle’s belongings in an effort to uncover the truth about his history.

I was sent a box of clues to help decipher the mystery of the interconnected stories as well!  The first clue is an audio recording read by Brian Selznick himself.  There’s so much information in it! The clip talks all about different generations of actors with the last name Marvel (who I’m assuming are related to Billy Marvel) and the lives they led playing different roles in Shakespeare plays at the Royal Theater.  The clip is three and a half minutes long  and I couldn’t help wishing it were longer!

The next clue I pulled out of the box is probably the coolest thing I have ever received because it’s a PIRATE SHIP or a regular ship but who knows.  Since The Marvels synopsis tells us that Billy Marvel survived a shipwreck aboard The Kraken, I’m hoping for pirates of some kind.  This clue is an item found in Joseph’s uncles house so I’m mostly curious how he’s connected to the shipwreck and presumably to Billy Marvel.  Maybe he’s one of those guys obsessed with history? Or maybe that history hits close to home and he’s related to Billy Marvel? Only time will tell!

Lastly, I also received a framed print of The Kraken which is signed by Brian Selznick himself (MAJOR FANGIRLING ENSUE).  The waves in the photo look very unsettled so I’m guessing that this print is a still of the ship during the storm responsible for taking it down. Another big hint is the giant bolt of lightening striking the boat on the starboard side.  I also love how the ship is named The Kraken.  It makes the mystery of all these interconnected lives that much more intriguing.

One winner will receive 1) a hand-signed print 2) custom The Marvels jigsaw puzzle, and 3) a copy of the book. Prizing is courtesy of Scholastic and open to US residents.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Brian Selznick will be doing a book tour for The Marvels in case you’d like to meet him yourself or get a copy of the book signed and the full schedule has just been posted here!  You can also view the book trailer  (which is really beautiful and whimsical) below.

And don’t forget to check out the other stops on the tour for more clues!
