Tea & Book Chat: A Court of Thorns and Roses By Sarah J. Maas (A Court of Thorns and Roses #1)

I was lucky enough to get my hands on an ARC of A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas and I couldn’t have been happier to dive into Tamlin and Feyre’s story immediately.  ACOTAR is a Beauty and the Beast retelling and the parallel’s between the stories are very evident.  In order to pay the debt of taking a fairy’s life, Feyre is sentenced to living out the rest of her life in the Spring Court with it’s High Lord Tamlin and his emissary Lucien.  While she’s hesitant at first, Feyre’s new life away from her ungrateful mortal family quickly becomes a much better home for her.

Overall, Feyre is a great character.  I love her innate need to paint and express herself through artwork and I adore the way she inner monologues about her feelings towards painting.  I thought it was really interesting to replace Beauty’s love of books and reading with a different form of creativity.  Maas took the distinction a step farther and made her main character illiterate (which is also a HUGE change from Caelena from her Throne of Glass series).  She also reinterpreted the Beast’s physical ailment as a mask that is unable to be removed and is stuck on everyone in the Spring Court.  My favorite character in the series is Lucien who is the Beast’s emissary.  Lucien serves as Beast’s snarky one-eyed cohort.  Tamlin, the Beast of the story is initially kinder than the Beast of the fairy tale.  He’s a likeable lead who is very powerful and concerned with helping the people of his court.

I loved reading about the fairy lore and all of the world-building that went into ACOTAR.  Everything felt so real and the fairy realm beyond the wall sounds breathtaking.  There were so many scenes I can vividly recall in my mind where I remember wishing that I could ever see something so beautiful in real life.  I read this 416 page story in two days because I was so enthralled that I couldn’t possibly part from the book.  I also have to mention how BEAUTIFUL the cover is.  It definitely does the book justice.  There are so many aspects of this story that I fell in love with and I cannot wait until the next book comes out.  Speaking of love, I could not write a review of this book without mentioning the steamy romance between Tamlin and Feyre.  Their love is so intense and we get a much more in depth look at their private moments together than is typically offered in the YA genre.

Final Thoughts: A Court of Thorns and Roses is an exceptional fairytale retelling of Beauty and the Beast.  Everything about this book from the cover to the story inside is breathtaking.  The landscapes of the fairy realm captured my heart and the parallel’s between it and the original fairytale left me with such an emotional attachment.

A thrilling, seductive new series from New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas, blending Beauty and the Beast with faerie lore.

When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she’s been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow grows over the faerie lands, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.

Perfect for fans of Kristin Cashore and George R. R. Martin, this first book in a sexy and action-packed new series is impossible to put down! (via Goodreads)

5 Fandom Friday: My Fictional BFF’s

I tend to be a quieter person (depending on the circumstances).  I enjoy connecting with people one on one but when I’m in a large group I usually feel kind of overwhelmed and wishing I was home with a good book instead.  I’ve always been a great listener and everyone tells me I’m really supportive and I offer helpful and insightful advice.  I tend to get along best with strong-minded individuals who are more outgoing than I am.  I had such a fun time thinking of which fictional characters I would get along the best with and why I could see us being best friends.  Here’s my list!

1

1) Luna Lovegood – Luna is wacky and I love her to pieces.  I would be so interested in hearing her speak about her theories and thoughts that I could picture us having plenty of tea dates together. (Sorry guys, you know I can’t go a blog post without mentioning Harry Potter at least once!)

1

2) Celaena Sardothien – Caelena is such a brave and fierce heroine.  I would happy to help her do research about what could possibly be going on in the castle and I would totally cover for her when need be.1

3) Belle – Belle is more introspective than the other characters I would call my BFF’s, but I just know we would chat about books together for HOURS on end.  Plus, she seems generous and I bet she would let me walk around her library.

1

4) Veronica Mars – I appreciate Veronica’s snark and I would love to be there to help her sort out her ongoing issues with Logan because they’re perfect together.

1

5) Echo – Echo is hilariously snarky and puts up a strong front to protect the people she loves.  She’s loyal and caring and we have the same taste in food (plus we live in the same city which is super convenient).  I would love to be able to call her a friend!

Waiting on Wednesday: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases we’re eagerly anticipating.  This is my first week participating and I feel obligated to choose Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses.  The cover is my favorite of 2015 so far and I just cannot wait to delve into my own copy when it debuts on May 5th!

5 Fandom Friday: Books I’ve Bought But Haven’t Read Yet

I have a bad habit of continuing to buy books… LOTS of books when I haven’t read a lot of the ones already sitting on my bookshelf.  I’ve made resolution after resolution to stop doing this but when I walk into a bookstore and see a shiny new book sitting there all lonely, I can’t help but want to pick it up and give it a good home.  It just seems like the right thing to do.  Granted, sometimes I receive books from publishers in an exchange for an honest review so that will dictate what I read, but I still want to get better about reading what I own.  Here are 5 books that I’ve already purchased that are sitting in my TBR pile.

1

Alienated by Melissa Landers

1

Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

1

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

1

Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
