Turn of the Season: Goodbye, Summer! – Favorite Summer Memories

Turn of the Season is a week long blogging event being hosted by Alexa of Alexa Loves Books and I.  Alexa is a sweet Summer child and I’m an Autumn fox baby so we wanted to put together an event celebrating the end of Alexa’s season and the beginning of mine.  Throughout the week we’ll be highlighting some of our summer favorites as well as our autumn anticipations!

Favorite Summer Memories

BEA / BookCon – These happened at the tail end of May into June but I got to spend the entire event with Alexa which was such a pleasure! We got all the books we had been looking forward to, attended some really fun parties with amazing authors, and hung out at BookCon with Rachel, Andi and Lili!

Meeting Jenny Han, Sarah Dessen & Jennifer E. Smith – I’ve ALWAYS wanted to meet Jenny Han.  She’s my favorite contemporary author and I was THRILLED when Books of Wonder announced the event.  Lili was even sweet enough to pick up a book and number for me so I didn’t get stuck there ALL since this was a VERY popular event!

Attending Joe & Kris’s Biergarten Show – My brother in law and sister in law are super talented musician and one Sunday afternoon they had a gig at the Biergarten in Astoria. Andrew and I attended along with his parents and his sisters Brittany and Molly and we had such a great time!

Alaska – Alaska is certainly a place that I never planned on venturing to but when my brother in law moved there with his fiance, that plan changed! It was really fun to spend so much time with Andrew’s family and to see the beautiful landscapes that are so very different from those in NYC.

Brunch with Andrew, Kristina & Joe – Kristina and Joe made a quick trip to NYC and Andrew and I were able to meet up with them at Dos Caminos which was so much fun! We hadn’t ever met Joe but he was so nice and it was fun to hear about their wedding planning!

My Birthday Weekend in Mystic, CT – This was SUCH an amazing trip! Andrew, my brother Bob, his girlfriend Amanda and I ventured to Mystic, CT the weekend of my birthday and it was the perfect mini getaway.  We packed so much into so few days- we visited Gilette Castle, the Mystic Aquarium where we fell in love with the most friendly beluga whale, Mystic Pizza and my personal favorite, Book Barn where we saw a cute little Hobbit Hole!

Ice Cream dates with friends – I’m really glad that I’ve began seeing Alexa and Rachel on a regular basis<3 It’s so nice to have bookish friends so closeby and even better to be able to eat ice cream together and talk about books! And our last ice cream date was with Lili who I adore!

#ReadADessen: What Happened to Goodbye Book Look + Giveaway

Note: I was provided a copy of  What Happened to Goodbye by Penguin Teen as a #PRHPartner to read and spotlight this book.

The countdown is winding down for Sarah Dessen’s thirteenth novel, Once and For All, which is being released on June 6th!  I’m so excited for her newest book because wedding planning(!) but in the meantime, Penguin Teen put together a special blog tour, highlighting Sarah’s backlist books and encouraging readers to read or re-read everything during the countdown to Once and For All.  Today I’m posting a Book Look for What Happened to Goodbye.  What Happened to Goodbye is about a girl named Mclean who chooses to stay with her father after her parents go through a very messy divorce.  Because of her dad’s job, the pair move around from town to town and Mclean takes the opportunity to reinvent herself in each school she attends.  Because of the constant relocating, Mclean begins to lose herself and What Happened to Goodbye follows Mclean’s journey to self discovery when she begins to feel comfortable and form attachments in her most recent town.

Tea & Book Chat: Mini Reviews – Famous in Love by Rebecca Serle & That Summer by Sarah Dessen

This is my first installment of mini-reviews! Sometimes I’ll read a book and I don’t have enough feelings (or time) to write a full review for it but I don’t want to not talk about them at all, and so mini-reviews were born.

Famous in Love by Rebecca Serle

I decided to pick Famous in Love up because I wanted to read the book before watching the television show of the same name which debuted on Freeform in early April and in full on Hulu after the premiere of the first episode. I really didn’t have strong feelings about this book either way.  It was cute, quick and fun but I didn’t feel attached to any of the characters or the storyline.  Once I shut the book, I found the story to be very forgettable and if it weren’t for the show, I don’t think I would even still remember the character names.  The story centers around Paige Townsen, a normal teenage girls with the dream of becoming an actress who gets discovered at an audition to play the lead role in an upcoming film adaptation of a popular book series called Locke.  Locke has a ton of parallels to Twilight, but as the story focuses on the behind the scenes love triangle between Paige and her co-stars, Rainer and Jordan, it reads as if someone wrote Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner fanfiction.

That Summer by Sarah Dessen

I decided to start way back at the very beginning of Sarah Dessen’s backlist and read everything she’s written in publication order for two reasons.  The first one being I’ve heard there are cameos in each book from past characters and the second one being that the consensus is that most people seem to love Along for the Ride and Just Listen.  I didn’t want to start with either of those and then feel disappointed in her other books so I started with low expectations and I’m continuing to assume that they’ll get better.  That being said, I was not a fan of That Summer.  It was… fine.  I didn’t feel like very much happened and I found myself to be very bored while I was reading.  I kept wondering how the story was going to wrap up and what the big conflict would be because I kept getting closer to the end and nothing was happening and then it just kind of never came.  I also didn’t feel any connection to any of the characters so it just wasn’t my cup of tea.  But I will be continuing on and I’m not going to judge her works by this one mishap!

#ReadADessen: Dreamland Book Look + Giveaway

Note: I was provided a copy of  Dr. First, Dr. Fourth, Dr. Eleventh and Dr. Twelfth by Penguin Teen as a #PRHPartner to read and spotlight these books.

The countdown is upon us for Sarah Dessen’s thirteenth novel, Once and For All, which is being released on June 6th.  I’m so excited for her newest book because wedding planning(!) but in the meantime, Penguin Teen put together a special blog tour, highlighting Sarah’s backlist books and encouraging readers to read or re-read everything during the countdown to Once and For All.  Today I’m posting a Book Look for Dreamland.  Dreamland is one of Sarah’s more serious books and the story is much darker than your typical summer contemporary.  It follows a girl named Caitlin who’s sister ran away and she’s dealing with the feelings of missing her sister and a mother who’s withdrawn when she meets Rogerson Biscoe.  From then on, it feels like Caitlin has entered a dreamland where nothing is quite real.  Rogerson is compelling and magnetic, but his darker and more dangerous side starts coming out and suddenly, being with Rogerson becomes a larger problem than being without him.
