Wish List Worthy: Sailor Moon Sweeties Usagi Tsukino Figure

I need to figure out how to use one of those middle man services to order goodies from Japan because this new Sailor Moon figure by Megahouse is something that I absolutely need to add to my collection.  It’s so pink and pretty and it completely matches my aesthetic and celebrates my love of ice cream.  I love that Usagi is wearing a retro diner waitress ensemble and she’s sitting in a little ice cream sundae bowl =^.^= So presh.  It’s available to preorder on the Japanese Bandai website and it should be released in March of 2017.

Summer of Sailor Scouts: Volume #2 Manga Review & Impressions

Summer of Sailor Scouts

Earlier this year, Alexa of Alexa Loves Books, Cee of The Novel Hermit, Cristina of Girl in the Pages, Sierra of SDavReads & I all discovered that we shared a mutual love and appreciation for Sailor Moon! After exchanging plenty of flailing tweets and constantly bringing up our love for this magical girl story, we felt it was only right to celebrate it – and that’s what happening this July. Every week will feature a brand new blog post per day from each of us, and we’re so excited to be sharing the Sailor Moon love with all our readers!

This week we’re each discussing a different volume of the manga!  Since my post is on Tuesday, I’ll be talking about the second volume (Alexa discussed volume 1 yesterday, Cee will talk about volume 3 tomorrow, Cristina will continue with volume 4 on Thursday and Sierra will conclude with volume 5 on Friday). Don’t forget to check out my Sailor Moon Art Collectionmy wish listSailor Moon FavoritesSailor Moon Book Tag, enter our giveaway!

  1.  I love that all of the Sailor Scouts are already assembled by the end of the second volume.  It takes a really long time to get to that point in the anime and a huge reason why I’m such a Sailor Moon addict is enjoying the antics of the ultimate girl gang.  I love seeing the girls work together to fight evil and bring justice to the monster who are plaguing them.  The girls are very close and they’re always looking out for one another despite some sisterly bickering between battles.
  2. When Sailor Venus shows up, the girls believe that she is Princess Serenity and Sailor Venus doesn’t correct them right away.  In the anime, this moment was a cliffhanger at the end of one episode but it was immediately rectified within the first minute of the following episode.  I think Sailor Venus is even more mature in the manga than the anime and she has so much experience fighting evil that she’s an important asset to the team.
  3. In volume 2, Sailor Moon already realizes that she is Princess Serenity.  She begins having memories of her past and she also learns that Tuxedo Mask is Mamoru.  She also remembers that he is someone she loved in her past.  Again, this takes forever in the anime!
  4. The girls are able to travel to the Moon and talk with the former Queen of the Moon Kingdom which allows them to learn more about themselves and more about the Dark Kingdom and how they’ve come to Earth.
  5. The end of this volume is more somber than the first volume.  It definitely leaves you needing to read volume 3 ASAP to continue the story of the scouts.
  6. While I do like the anime more than the manga, I have to say how much I love the artwork.  It’s so magical and I could stare at it all day! I like that Kodansha includes color pages at the beginning of each volume (even though the interior artwork is my favorite).  I think they do a good job of trying to convey the transformation sequences and weapon scenes but nothing will ever compare the animation.  It helps to already have those scenes embedded in my mind while reading!

Summer of Sailor Scouts: Favorites

This week we’re each discussing our favorites within the Sailor Moon fandom world! Don’t forget to check out our Sailor Moon Book Tag and enter our giveaway!

For the first time in almost 10 years, Sailor Moon will be coming back to North American audiences, through their deal with Viz Media (the company that has acquired exclusive North American rights from Toei Animation) will stream the first four episodes of Sailor Moon.

Favorite Scout: Sailor Venus

Last week I talked extensively about why Sailor Venus is my favorite Scout and I recommended a bunch of books that I think would appeal to her if she had time to read when she isn’t saving the world.

4

Favorite Version: Japanese original with subtitles

I only wish I could speak and understand Japanese so I could experience the show as it was originally created.  I’m currently re-watching the series with my husband and we’re watching the dubbed version and while I still enjoy it, there are some differences that I like better in the Japanese version.  I always find it interesting to see which versions of anime other people prefer because there’s really no right or wrong answer to this question despite many people having strong opinions about it.

1

Favorite Overall Plot: Season 1

I have to agree with Alexa on this one!  I love seeing the formation of the inner senshi and watching the girls friendship form in their early days.  They really band together to stop Queen Beryl from extracting all of the positive energy in the world but even watching the girls clash with one another as they discover who they are makes for a wonderful story.

1

Favorite Episode: I Want a Boyfriend: The Cruise Ship is a Trap

I haven’t watched the series in years but this episode is one that Andrew and I watched last weekend and I loved everything about it.  The title of the episode is hilarious and I love the competitive vibes between Usagi and Rei.  I’ve always liked Rei a lot because I feel like she challenges Usagi and despite her tough demeanor, she cares a lot about the people in her life.  Plus I love that Usagi transforms herself into a reporter to get about the couples cruise ship and there’s a wonderful message the episode sends at its conclusion.

1

Favorite Villain & Least Favorite Sailor Scout: Black Lady / Chibiusa

Black Lady is an evil adult version of Chibiusa and while she isn’t my favorite villain in the overall series, she is the villain who’s character design I enjoy the most.  Black Lady has Chibiusa’s pink hair worn in Sailor Moon’s signature style, and she wears a long black dress with slits.  She has gorgeous jewelry and she’s basically a style icon for any pastel goth.  I think Chibiusa is a better villain than guardian (she always got on my nerves so I was surprised to learn that she’s Japan’s favorite character!)

1

Favorite Non-Scout Character: Artemis

I love Artemis! He’s so funny and his relationship with Sailor Venus always amuses me.  He pushes her to be better and to follow her dreams but he also makes fun of her at times and he himself is pretty lazy.

1

Favorite Scout Accessory: Transformation Brooch

This is a near impossible question because part of the reason I love Sailor Moon so much is because of the extensive collection of accessories she uses to aid herself in punishing people in the name of the moon.  If I had had had to choose I would go with the Transformation Brooch because it’s the first item that Luna gives her, allowing her to transform into a Guardian.  She even wears it as part of her civilian uniform.

1

Least Favorite Relationship: Sailor Moon / Tuxedo Mask

Many people may disagree with me on this point but I think Tuxedo Mask is kind of the worst.  He always shows up when Sailor Moon is fighting, does absolutely nothing, and then leaves her to finish the battle.  Some people may argue that he’s showing her emotional support but I just disagree.  He antagonizes her in their civilian forms, his disguise is a joke and also he’s like, creepily older than her.  He’s not a terrible character, I just don’t like them together.  I definitely appreciate the friendship aspect of the fandom much more.

This week, we’re each discussing our favorite Sailor Scouts and giving book recommendations based on their personality!  My favorite scout has always been Sailor Venus.  First of all, we’re introduced to her because she’s the star of her own video game and Sailor Moon is addicted at the arcade.  Plus, she has her own manga series that’s collected in two volumes so I feel like she’s one of the scouts that we get to know the most (if you read Codename: Sailor V).  She’s very similar to Sailor Moon but she’s not as much of a crybaby.  She’s outgoing and ambitious and she’s a born leader.  She tends to get serious when she transforms, hiding away her sillier side.  Sailor Venus (who attempted to give herself the nickname ‘The Goddess of Love”) is also pretty boy crazy which is always entertaining to me.  She’s obsessed with celebrities too and she’ll follow them anywhere which reminds me of my own fandom tendencies.  One area where we differ is that Sailor Venus is much more athletic than I’ve ever been / hope to be.

I think she would most enjoy reading contemporary romances and anything about celebrities or fans.  Here are my recs for her!

Sailor V - 1_600px

The Hundred Oaks Series by Miranda Kenneally – This is the first series that immediately popped into my head when I thought about books Sailor Venus would enjoy because it’s a sports romance.  Each book focuses on a different story and a different sport (but all the stories are set at Hundred Oaks High).Sailor V-2_600px

Something Real by Heather Demetrios – I think Sailor Venus would love to read Something Real because of her fascination with celebrities.  She would get to read from the perspective of a teenage star and I think she would love it so much, she would read it in one sitting!Sailor V-3_600px

The Pivot Point Duology by Kasie West – Pivot Point and Split Second are also contemporary romance novels where football plays a part in.  Plus they have a sci-fi twist, which is similar to Sailor Venus’s own story!Sailor V-4_600px

Hello, I Love You by Katie M. Stout – This is another one that I think Sailor Venus would like because of her love of celebrities.  It follows an American girl who moves to Korea to study abroad and ends up falling in love with a K-Pop star.

Wish List Worthy: Sailor Moon Luggage

I came across the cutest Sailor Moon luggage, carry ons and passport covers ever and I’ve been swooning over them ever since.  The accessories incorporate everything I love about fashion.  They’re pastel colored, they’re detailed with bows, and even the inside lining is covered in moonsticks.  My favorite of the sets are the bags styled after Sailor Jupiter because mint green and pastel pink are my aesthetic.  I’m really hoping I’ll be able to buy these online without spending hundreds of dollars for it on eBay! Japan always gets the best merchandise.  For even more photos you can see everything on the Sailor Moon Collectibles website.

Wish List Worthy: Sailor Moon Petit Chara Christmas Figures

There’s nothing I love more than Christmas and now that the season has officially begun with it being Fall and all I’ve started looking at decorations and listening to Christmas music and all that fun traditional stuff that everyone gives me a hard time for starting early each year.  During my browsing, I came across these amazing Sailor Moon petit chara Christmas figures by Megahouse.  Each Sailor Scout has a santa hat that matches her outfit but best of all, Sailor Venus comes with a snowman version of Artemis! I mean, it doesn’t get any cuter than that.  I also love that they’re sold as a set and it’s not any of this blind box business.  Sadly it seems that the preorders have already sold out on every single website (they’re scheduled to be released in November) but I’m still hoping to find them on eBay at some point.  They’re just so adorable and festive and I want them so much!
