Tasty Treats: New Food Roundup

I really like love food.  There have been quite a few newly announced treats that the mere sight of have mad my mouth water.  These treats have made their way on to my summer list of foods to try and I felt obligated to round them up here and share them with everyone else because as I said, I really love food.

Yesterday afternoon, Baked by Melissa announced the three flavors you can begin purchasing as part of their 2015 Summer Collection.  Of the three, Sugar Cookie takes the [cup]cake for most appealing flavor IMO.  I’m excited to try all three, but I don’t think anything could beat last year’s Key Lime Pie number because YUM.  The new collection is available from June 23rd through September 22nd.

Next on my list is these Rainbow Sherbet flavored Fruity Pebbles!  I’m mostly imagining eating them as an ice cream topping.  A huge plus is the beautiful blue packaging and the neon colors of the cereal.  They just scream SUMMER!

1Anyone who is local to NYC or planning on visiting should make it a priority to visit Ample Hills Creamery and / or Baked bakery who have teamed up to bring us this glorious dessert dubbed the Black & Walt.  The Black & Walt sandwiches vanilla malt ice cream with malted fudge between two black and white cookies and it’s rolled in malted chocolate Rice Krispies crunch.  Be still my heart.

Party Planning: Doctor Who Premiere

It’s not every day that the Doctor regenerates so when the 8th season of Doctor Who premiered on BBC, I knew I had to go all out.  I am a diehard fan of the Eleventh Doctor (other Kristin prefers Ten), so I was having an especially difficult time coping with the change.  I thought it might take my mind off things if I marathoned my favorite episodes and baked my heart out during all of the hours leading up to Peter Capaldi’s debut.  I even employed the artistic skills of my awesome boyfriend Andrew to draw on the balloons, the bathroom mirror, and the solo cups. The first thing that I knew I would be spending hours baking were my favorite cookie, the Jammie Dodger.  It’s kind of become tradition that I bake these for most of the big episodes because they are one of my favorite cookies, but they require a lot of work.  The recipe for Jammie Dodgers is one of the first things we’ve ever posted on our blog and I’ve been making them ever since Kristin shared it.  I used cookie cutters from WarpZone on Etsy to capture the likenesses of the Weeping Angels, Daleks, and my beloved 11th Doctor.

The next treat obviously had to be TARDIS themed so I was thrilled to see this beautiful cake that The Nerdy Girlie posted.  Since I was baking alone I cheated a little on this one and I used a premade cake mix and frosting that I picked up at Michaels along with TARDIS blue food coloring and black and white frosting tubes and writing tips.  Once the cake was baked, I dyed the frosting blue and I used the black frosting tube with the icing tip to draw a horizontal line about 1/4 down from the top of the cake.  Then I drew another black frosting line down the center, four squares on each side of the line, and two small lines in the middle (as handles).  Above the line, I drew and filled in a black rectangle which I later wrote “Police Box” on in the white frosting.  I also filled in the top two squares with white frosting and the second square on the left.  I used the black frosting to draw windows panes and scribble a Police Box message.  Voila!
Next, I went on a spree at Party City where I picked up TARDIS blue, white, and red decorations.  I transformed the red napkins into bow ties because bow ties are cool.  The napkins were very simply constructed and I decided to stick with making just 11 of them.  For reasons.  I folded each napkin over until I perfected the desired bow-like result and used a thin strip of construction paper and tape to complete the look and secure the bows in place.  Andrew drew on the red solo cups to give the appearance of Fez’s while they sat on the table waiting to be used, and he drew Police Box doors on the blue cups for TARDISes.  He also wrote Bad Wolf on the bathroom mirror so our guests could take some selfies.  Another photo station I wanted to set up involved hanging my TARDIS blanket in front of our living room closet.  Lastly, Andrew drew Silence faces, Daleks, and TARDISes on colored balloons which we hung behind the television.  Oh wait! We also hung TARDIS lights near the couch for added ambiance.

The next baked good on the agenda were Adipose and Ood cupcakes.  I used a plain vanilla cake mix and frosting for the base and then began decorating.  I bought a bag of jumbo marshmallows and mini marshmallows to create the little Adipose.  I used the black frosting and icing tip to draw their faces onto jumbo marshmallows and then used frosting to hold the mini marshmallow arms in place.  The legs sit easily on the cupcake top in front of the jumbo body.  For the Ood faces, I used pull and peel twizzlers to create the hanging red tentacles on their faces.  I cut them into small segments and peeled them apart and used the icing to hold them in place.  I used even smaller segments for each of their eyes.

The last item on the food menu was the Cassandra nacho dip.  I had seen a lasagna version online at some point but since I’m not a fan of pasta and this wasn’t a full dinner party, I thought that I could recreate the look with nacho dip and luckily I was right! I used this recipe http://allrecipes.com/recipe/hot-bean-dip/ for the initial dip and it was delicious!  I also bought a radish which I cut a slice of and then halved to use as eyes.  The black center was drawn on with icing (because I figured no one would be eating them anyway, but a nice alternative is a tiny black olive slice).  Then I cut the side off of a full sized tomato and used a knife to shape it into lips.

5 Fandom Friday: Comfort Foods That Always Make Me Feel Better

This week’s 5 Fandom Friday topic is “Comfort Foods that Always Make Me Feel Better.”  In a surprise to no one, my list includes some of my favorite desserts- cupcakes and ice cream, and my two biggest comfort meal foods- pizza and bagels (but, very importantly, only from New York).  If this were a favorite foods list, sushi would be in there somewhere too.

1) New York Bagels – I remember being in elementary school and counting down the days each week until it would finally be Wednesday and I could finally enjoy a bagel.  I don’t eat them as often as I used to (which is a shame since I’m now living and working in NYC, the bagel capital of the world)
2) Starbucks Zen Tazo Tea – My body basically runs on Zen Tazo tea.  I have about 3-4 20oz cups of it each day at work and sometimes I’ll even spring for an additional cup at night.  I like that the Zen tea isn’t a straight green tea.  It blends lemongrass, and spearmint as well which makes for an irresistible flavor.
3) Ben & Jerry’s Cinnamon Buns or Candy Bar Pie – The Ben & Jerry’s Candy Bar Pie is a recent addition to my list but it is seriously the PERFECT ice cream.  It’s the exact right combination of sweet and salty and I could eat container after container.  I particularly love enjoying it while watching Netflix so it’s kind of a double comfort food.  Cinnamon Buns has always been one of my favorite flavors Ben & Jerry’s consistently produces.  It has cinnamon bun dough chunks, and a cinnamon swirl all mixed in with caramel flavored ice cream.  Delish!
4) Cupcakes – Also living in NYC, I have a pretty wide selection of bakeries to buy cupcakes from when the craving strikes.  If I’m in the mood for something small and sweet I would head to Baked by Melissa for chocolate peanut butter cupcakes.  If I want a flavorful full sized treat, my first instinct is to head to SoHo for Georgetown Cupcakes.  I especially love their Key Lime flavor.  And lastly, if I want a classic vanilla cupcake, I’ll hit up Magnolia for buttercream goodness.
5) New York Pizza – The first thing I do whenever I land home in New York after going on vacation is to make it a priority to eat a slice of pizza, no matter how late or early I arrive.  I made the mistake of ordering pizza in a few other states (the only one that was okay-ish IMO is Chicago), and there’s just nothing that compares.  Andrew and I also have designated Sunday as pizza and video game day so I look forward to it every week!

Comics, Desserts, Hobbits & Cartoons

I’ve been itching to get into a better blogging routine for posting more on SuperSpaceChick since it’s my personal site and I have some of the most fun writing things here than I do any other place.  I’ve already been plotting some really exciting things with The Nerdy Girlie and I cannot wait to debut our new idea to all our blogger friends out there on the interwebz!  I’m sure we’ll even make some new ones in the process :-D  But, since this has been one whirlwind of an eventful week, I thought I’d share all of the wonderful things that’ve been happening in my first foray back into blogging!

It’s been a very slow moving process for me to bring all of my beloved collectibles, books, comics, and other assorted treasures to my new home.  I moved into an apartment in Brooklyn in May with my good friend Taylor and my new friend Emma.  Since then, it’s been weekend after weekend of my wonderfully supportive family and boyfriend Andrew driving from my old Long Island home to my new place and carrying heavy bag after heavy bag of graphic novels, shoes, statues, video games, books, and more up several flights of stairs and into my bright pink room.  In the last batch of packed items I hauled some of my favorite comfort graphic novels since I had previously tried to fill my shelves with things I have yet to read.  Since I have less space here it’s been quite a project to prioritize and determine which things I want to have here and which collectibles should be displayed.  One of my creative ways to display more toys was to prop my TV set up on several art books so I could place my Star Wars themed Disney Vinylmations in front of the set without blocking the picture.  It’s kind of funny to think that I’ve been trying to de-clutter my online life (another project this week was to unfriend anyone on Facebook that isn’t a close personal friend, a family member, or someone I communicate with regularly online), while trying to maximize the clutter in my real life.

IMG_9238While I’m on the subject of comics, SPIDER-GWEN came out last week and it was literally one of the best moments of my life.  It’s part of the Spider-Verse story arc and it takes place in an alternate dimension where Gwen Stacy was bitten by a spider and becomes Spider-Woman.  Even more exciting than this is that Gwen is awesome.  She’s the drummer in a band called The Mary Janes with Mary Jane Watson as the lead vocalist.  Their hit song is fittingly titled Face It Tiger and there’s already a band that recorded their interpretation of the song!  It has a punk feel which totally fits the story.  I love the father/daughter dynamic of the story between Gwen and Captain Stacy and I really really really hope Marvel sees all of the positive feedback they’ve been getting and the pleading so many of us have done online for a Spider-Gwen ongoing series.  Gwen has always been my favorite Marvel lady for Peter Parker.  They’re my OTP.  To see Gwen in this one issue (and ASM #9) is a dream come true.  The variant cover even looks exactly like yours truly!

photoLately I’ve been on a major Disney kick.  I think it all began when I saw that Disney came out with a second wave of their beautiful fairytale collection mugs.  I have the Tangled mug from the first collection which I purchased after admiring Megan’s.  I remember how quickly they sold out of stores so a few hours after my discovery I speed walked over to the Disney Store in Times Square on my lunch break and I picked up the Aurora mug.  I also bought my first Tsum Tsum, Minnie, and she is just precious.  Shortly after that, Betty told me about the Tsum Tsum game that I could play on my iPhone, and let’s just say that Andrew has mentioned the word intervention more than once since I made my account.  It’s a really fast paced 60 second game where you have to connect as many of the same Tsum Tsum’s as possible.  The more points and coins you accrue, the more Tsum Tsum’s you can purchase and the higher level you’ll achieve.  It’s also fun because several of my other friends play too and we send each other hearts every chance we get!  Then on Saturday night Andrew agreed to have a Disney movie marathon with me.  We decided to watch The Little Mermaid, my personal favorite, and Frozen, my second favorite.  The marathon also included Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter Core Ice Cream which is just heavenly and brings us to the dessert and food portion of my post.  (Sleeping Beauty is coming out on blu-ray in October, so we’re going to fit that into our viewing schedule as soon as we get a copy too!)

It’s been big few weeks of desserts for me.  I’ve always had a sweet tooth and I’ve been trying my hardest to eat really healthy during the week for breakfast and lunch, that way I don’t feel as bad about indulging in some sugary sweets later on in the day.  The first photo, which may look like an ordinary Starbucks cup, is full of one of my seasonal favorites, the Pumpkin Spice latte.  I know it’s a thing that everyone makes fun of, and it’s even worse that I instagrammed it, but I love Pumpkin Spice everything and I’m not ashamed to admit it!  If it was offered throughout the year, I would buy even more of it than I do now, even though Andrew is convinced that I’m a victim of limited time marketing, but I’ll post more on that later.  We also found that Trader Joe’s, our go-to dinner source, made an ice cream version of Cookie Butter!  It’s vanilla ice cream with cookie butter inside and it’s just as delicious as it sounds.  The next photo are of some Battlestar Galactica cupcakes I baked a few weekends ago.  Andrew and I have been binge watching the series to the extreme and I felt inspired.  And when we’re not watching Starbuck, Adama, Helo, Apollo and the rest of the gang aboard Galactica, we’ve been having our regular weekend routine of Sunday pizza and video game day.  We’re currently in the middle of BioShock!  Andrew and I also stopped at my favorite cupcakery in NYC, Georgetown Cupcakes, to pick up a box to bring home and consume during tea time with my parents.  I love trying their monthly flavors and I’m really looking forward to when Gingerbread returns.  One of the most exciting things I’ve done this week is that I FINALLY tried a cronut.  And not just any cronut, a coffee creme filled cronut.  It was scrumptious!  I’ve never been a huge fan of donuts, however, I am a big advocator of croissants.  I also had a macaron brownie which is basically a macaron half dipped in chocolate and wedged in between a rich chocolate brownie.  All of this sugary goodness was eaten at Paris Baguette with Leonard and Andrew, where we also debated the number of times Gallifrey was shown on Doctor Who, discusses Peter Capaldi’s attack eyebrows, and complained relentlessly about how Clara needs to go.  Another new thing I tried is the Lazy Sunday ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s.  There are cupcakes bits inside it and I developed very strong feelings about it within the first few bites.  Lastly, a Smashburger was recently opened in NYC and since I used to love going there during lunch at my old job with my friends, I suggested that Andrew and I head there for dinner.  My favorite item on their menu is the Nutter Butter shake.  I also got an Avocado Ranch Black Bean Burger (vegetarian), and veggie fries which I like to think are healthier than regular french fries, but probably not.

Since I started working at my new job, I am no longer allowed to dress casually.  This has meant that I’ve been purchasing and wearing an influx of geeky jewelry so I can still feel like myself from 9-5.  Some of my new favorites are this Groot necklace by Red Dingo Designs on Etsy and this Hobbit Hole necklace that was fashioned after Bag End.  I wore my Hobbit necklace most of last week because I am so excited for my future Lord of the Rings plans.  My wonderful boyfriend Andrew got tickets for us to see the full LOTR trilogy screened with a live orchestra at Lincoln Center next April.  The event takes place over three separate nights and I’m going to be decked out in all the Tolkien things every single performance.  Now the only question is how I’m going to be able to wait until next April!

Luckily I still have the weekend to exercise the fun part of my wardrobe!  I decided to wear my LSP skater dress by Black Milk on Saturday for my Grandma’s 75th surprise party.  I accessorized with my glittery LSP necklace, House of Harlow fringe earrings, a ton of bracelets, my Batman ring, and my favorite pair of Jeffrey Campbell wedge boots.  Oh my glob did I feel great!  I was almost as tall as Andrew!  Then this morning I was feeling very magical girl and I decided to wear my Pinkie Moon t-shirt from WeLoveFine.  It’s a mash up of Sailor Moon and My Little Pony which seemed appropriate since Andrew and I were going to a movie theater in Williamsburg to watch cartoons.  I accessorized with my Artemis ring and my Moon Stick necklace, both of which were purchased on Etsy.  You also get a sneak peek of my bookshelf in this photo!  I’m going to be doing a more in depth post about my new room once I feel like I have it decorated to my hearts desire.

So, as I mentioned above, there’s a wonderful indie cinema in Brooklyn called NiteHawk Cinema.  They hold a monthly event called Spoons, Toons, and Booze and it’s one of the most fun events I’ve ever been too.  I’m definitely going to go back next month, and I’m crossing my fingers that it’ll be Halloween themed.  There’s an all you can eat cereal bar included in your ticket price.  I munched on Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, Golden Grahams, Fruit Loops, and a peanut butter Jif cereal from Canada while Andrew’s cereals of choice included Cocoa Puffs and Oops All Berries.  There’s also a separate menu you can order from if you want other brunch foods, and there’s a menu of cocktails as well.  I had a black tea and lemon iced drink that was infused with vodka.  They also offer cereal shots, in which you mix a shot of Baileys or Kahlua with milk and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.  And the best part of the whole ordeal is that all of this food is served while you watch Saturday morning cartoons on a big screen.  There’s always a theme (this month’s was Rock and Roll), and the audience votes on which cartoons they watch.  In my session we viewed Garfield, Hey Arnold!, Rocko’s Modern Life, and Animaniacs. Afterwards, we walked along the Williamsburg Waterfront and admired the view of what we could see of the New York City skyline in the fog.  Then on our way back to my apartment we came across this beautiful graffiti!

And the last paragraph in this incredibly long post is dedicated to my favorite things I wrote this past week for On Wednesdays We Wear Pink.  We’ve been updating our site with 6-9 articles per day and I’m so proud of how much content we’ve been putting out but I’ve narrowed it down to my favorite posts.

Etsy Shop I’m Obsessed With This Week: Word To Your Unicorn

My fellow geek girl blogger and good friend Leslie Stewart, also happens to operate one of my all time favorite Etsy shops, Word to Your Unicorn.  Leslie sells post cards, greeting cards, and stickers which were inspired by her geeky and kawaii interests.  She keeps adding more and more to her shop and I always find myself favoriting every new item.  I’m especially obsessed with her recent Studio Ghibli and Sailor Moon designs.  I’m also loving the minimalist Avengers postcards which resemble Pantone color cards, and I dare you to look at the Dalek’s Need Love Too postcards without immediately wishing you could hug one of Doctor Who’s adversaries.  It’s fitting that Leslie would be impressing us with her designs in the form of postcards and greeting cards, because she’s also one of the co-creators of the International Geek Girls Pen Pal Club.  If you haven’t already joined, I highly suggest you do!  It’s a great way to make a new geeky friend, preserve the lost art of letter writing, and of course, get excited for geeky surprised in your daily snail mail delivery!  Leslie is uber talented and when she’s not busy designing new stationary, she’s blogging all of her clever thoughts on her new site Leslie IRL.  I have a bunch of Leslie’s stationary but I love it too much to send to anyone =^.^=
