Summer of Sailor Scouts: My Sailor Moon Art Collection

Summer of Sailor Scouts

Earlier this year, Alexa of Alexa Loves Books, Cee of The Novel Hermit, Cristina of Girl in the Pages, Sierra of SDavReads & I all discovered that we shared a mutual love and appreciation for Sailor Moon! After exchanging plenty of flailing tweets and constantly bringing up our love for this magical girl story, we felt it was only right to celebrate it – and that’s what happening this July. Every week will feature a brand new blog post per day from each of us, and we’re so excited to be sharing the Sailor Moon love with all our readers!

This week we’re each discussing Sailor Moon swag! I posted my wish list yesterday because I was having some technical difficulties uploading my video of my Sailor Moon art collection.  But the good news is that I have it to post today (even though it’s totally Cee’s day and you should head over to her blog to see her post)!  Don’t forget to check out our Sailor Moon FavoritesSailor Moon Book Tag, enter our giveaway!

For the first time in almost 10 years, Sailor Moon will be coming back to North American audiences, through their deal with Viz Media (the company that has acquired exclusive North American rights from Toei Animation) will stream the first four episodes of Sailor Moon.

Favorite Scout: Sailor Venus

Last week I talked extensively about why Sailor Venus is my favorite Scout and I recommended a bunch of books that I think would appeal to her if she had time to read when she isn’t saving the world.

Favorite Version: Japanese original with subtitles

I only wish I could speak and understand Japanese so I could experience the show as it was originally created.  I’m currently re-watching the series with my husband and we’re watching the dubbed version and while I still enjoy it, there are some differences that I like better in the Japanese version.  I always find it interesting to see which versions of anime other people prefer because there’s really no right or wrong answer to this question despite many people having strong opinions about it.

Favorite Overall Plot: Season 1

I have to agree with Alexa on this one!  I love seeing the formation of the inner senshi and watching the girls friendship form in their early days.  They really band together to stop Queen Beryl from extracting all of the positive energy in the world but even watching the girls clash with one another as they discover who they are makes for a wonderful story.

Favorite Episode: I Want a Boyfriend: The Cruise Ship is a Trap

I haven’t watched the series in years but this episode is one that Andrew and I watched last weekend and I loved everything about it.  The title of the episode is hilarious and I love the competitive vibes between Usagi and Rei.  I’ve always liked Rei a lot because I feel like she challenges Usagi and despite her tough demeanor, she cares a lot about the people in her life.  Plus I love that Usagi transforms herself into a reporter to get about the couples cruise ship and there’s a wonderful message the episode sends at its conclusion.

Favorite Villain & Least Favorite Sailor Scout: Black Lady / Chibiusa

Black Lady is an evil adult version of Chibiusa and while she isn’t my favorite villain in the overall series, she is the villain who’s character design I enjoy the most.  Black Lady has Chibiusa’s pink hair worn in Sailor Moon’s signature style, and she wears a long black dress with slits.  She has gorgeous jewelry and she’s basically a style icon for any pastel goth.  I think Chibiusa is a better villain than guardian (she always got on my nerves so I was surprised to learn that she’s Japan’s favorite character!)

Favorite Non-Scout Character: Artemis

I love Artemis! He’s so funny and his relationship with Sailor Venus always amuses me.  He pushes her to be better and to follow her dreams but he also makes fun of her at times and he himself is pretty lazy.

Favorite Scout Accessory: Transformation Brooch

This is a near impossible question because part of the reason I love Sailor Moon so much is because of the extensive collection of accessories she uses to aid herself in punishing people in the name of the moon.  If I had had had to choose I would go with the Transformation Brooch because it’s the first item that Luna gives her, allowing her to transform into a Guardian.  She even wears it as part of her civilian uniform.

Least Favorite Relationship: Sailor Moon / Tuxedo Mask

Many people may disagree with me on this point but I think Tuxedo Mask is kind of the worst.  He always shows up when Sailor Moon is fighting, does absolutely nothing, and then leaves her to finish the battle.  Some people may argue that he’s showing her emotional support but I just disagree.  He antagonizes her in their civilian forms, his disguise is a joke and also he’s like, creepily older than her.  He’s not a terrible character, I just don’t like them together.  I definitely appreciate the friendship aspect of the fandom much more.

Potter Month: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them NYC Premiere Ticket Buying Experience / STRESS

Potter Month

Potter Month is a month long celebration of Harry Potter hosted by myself and The Nerdy Girlie! If you partake in Potter Month, you can POST YOUR LINK HERE and see what other Potter fans are up to!

Despite this happening last week, I am writing this post mere minutes after finally acquiring tickets to the New York City premiere of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.  My heart is still POUNDING.  I’ve never met J.K. Rowling and she is my literal hero so I basically sat at my computer hungrily waiting for that countdown clock on the Carnegie Hall website to hit zero because I would do anything to meet my Queen!

I had the tab open in my computer since 9 AM so I thought I would be all set when 11AM rolled around. I was wrong because technology ARG.  As soon as the counter ended, a progress bar appeared with a little man walking toward the front of the line to buy tickets.  It only took him about 30 seconds to get to the front of line and then BOOM a screen saying there’s been an error detected and I could get back in the queue if I wanted. I WANTED. So I got back in line, only to have two client show up to my office. I have never gotten anyone coffee and situated them in a conference room so quickly in my life to date.  When I got back to my computer I was still waiting in line so all was good. Then the little man made his way to the end of the progress bar only to be met with another error.  WHY DOESN’T THE UNIVERSE UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENT OF THE YEAR TO ME?!?!  So I immediately started trying on my phone.  I got to the front of the line quickly there but it was near impossible to choose seats and get my phone to cooperate.  FREAK OUT COMMENCE.

(I should also point out that I am a tea drinker who stopped drinking coffee as soon as college ended because it makes me jittery and a little bit nauseated – for some reason I grabbed a grande cold brew coffee from Starbucks today of all days).  Next, I switched my browser to Internet Explorer and began trying again. At this point there was no line but no matter which tickets I clicked on (I was aiming for the balcony $25-$50 range), the website would only show me $500 tickets to add to my cart.  I began losing my mind because only one section said sold out and I should’ve been able to add cheaper ones to my cart.  So I literally sat at my computer for 20 minutes repeatedly selecting new tickets until finally I was able to add $250 tickets to my cart.  I text Andrew to see his feelings on that because it was still more than I really wanted to spend. Then I noticed that I only had one minute to complete my purchase before the tickets would expire (apparently they just started counting down my 20 minutes from the first time I searched tickets instead of when I actually placed them in my cart) so I began checking out without waiting for Andrew’s response.  Since I haven’t attended anything at Carnegie Hall in the past I had to create a new user profile which meant that my tickets expired while I was in the process. TYPICAL.  BUT, as fate would have it, the next time I tried to add tickets I was able to score two in the dress circle for $106 each!  Still more than I *wanted* to spend, but much more reasonable than $250 or $500 per ticket.  Plus, I think I’ll be really happy to be seated where we are once November rolls around.  Plus, we’re right by Melissa! So many of my New York friends were able to acquire tickets and I cannot wait to make a huge day of this premiere!

Potter Month: Harry Potter Spells Book Tag

Potter Month

Today I’m kicking off Potter Month with a good ole book tag!  I was tagged to do this one by Alexa of Alexa Loves Books ages ago but ya know, wedding planning (I wonder what I’ll have to start saying now that that excuse is no longer valid :-P)  But in all seriousness, I’m obviously thrilled to be tagged since Harry Potter is my life.  Megan and I even dedicated this whole month to Harry and gang!  I decided not to use the Harry Potter series as answers to any of the questions below because that would be too easy.

I just need this is my life ASAP. Laini Taylor’s writing is a thing of beauty and my BEA chapter sampler has sat unread on my bookshelf because I know I won’t be able to start reading it knowing that I’ll have to wait months to get more. 2_600px

I adore this series.  A Court of Thorns and Roses was my favorite book of 2015 and I didn’t think I could possibly love anything more.  It has all the elements that I love in a story: 1) fantasy, 2) not only a fairytale retelling but a Beauty and the Beast retelling, 3) a realm of faeries, each one named and modeled after the seasons and times of day and 4) the beginning of an epic love story.3_600px

I just finished reading The Unexpected Everything yesterday and I loved it to pieces! Unlike Morgan Matson’s other books which each focus on a very specific relationship, this one covered friendship, family and romantic love.  And Clark is a fantasy writer! *swoon*4_600px

If you’ve ever read If I Stay, you’ll completely understand why this book really got to me.  The beginning is probably one of the saddest things I’ve ever read and just being in the mind space of a girl who’s lost her entire family and is deciding whether she wants to continue living or let go was enough to get my tear ducts going.5_600px

Celaena Sardothian is one badass assassin.  Over the course of the four books that I’ve read (I still have to get to Queen of Shadows – I SWEAR I will soon) I’ve come to adore Celaena’s character.  She’s a fashionable assassin with a conscience and a penchant for reading so in addition to having a personal bodyguard we’d also have to literature to discuss when our lives aren’t in danger.6_600px

This is one of my favorite YA series and I’m EAGERLY awaiting the third book which finally has a title!  The Archived series follows a girl named Mackenzie who’s responsible for guiding lost souls back through a doorway which will allow librarians to re-catalog them where they belong.  Plus there’s an amazing book boyfriend that’s pretty irresistible.7_600px

As I stated in the first question, Laini Taylor is a beautiful word magician and I never want Daughter of Smoke and Bone to End (so much so that I haven’t read the final book because I can’t come to terms with not having more Laini Taylor to read).8_600px

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda is such an uplifting and humorous book.  It’s full of geeky references but most importantly, it’s about discovering who you are and how to be comfortable in your own skin.  I was rooting for Simon from page 1 and I think anyone who reads this would agree!9_600px

Now I know you’re thinking WHAT ARE THINKING KRISTIN?! ISN’T THIS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE BOOKS?! And the answer to that would be a big yes!  I wish I could forget it so I could enjoy the experience of reading it over again for the first time and being immersed in Kvothe’s world.  10_600px

Kiera Cass has the ability to completely get anyone out of a reading slump.  Her Selection series got me out a mini slump I was in last year because reading this series was like being addicted to an awful reality tv show.  I couldn’t stop reading and I had to know what would happen next despite disliking the main character and getting really annoyed at her life choices.11_600px

Two words: Will Herondale.12_600px

I could not put Carry On down when I read it last year! I thought it was going to take me a while to read since it’s over 500 pages but I’m pretty sure I devoured this over a two day period.  I remember sneaking in minutes of reading any time I had the opportunity!13_600px

Anyone who watched the December Spines with Wines book club knows just how much Cassie, Melissa and I loathed this book. All three of us only finished it because we had to discuss it for book club.  I remember always looking at it and frowning and just wishing I could move on already.  It had so much going for it with it being a standalone Nutcracker retelling but this one was just not for me.14_600px

My most recent laugh out loud read is Highly Illogical Behavior by John Corey Whaley.  The main character Solomon struggles with agoraphobia but he has one of the best senses of humor.  He has the best rapport with his family and his new friends and it led to me laughing out loud on the train several times during my commute.  15_600px

This is a book that I just could not get behind.  I enjoyed a lot of the elements of the main character (she wears retro clothes and bakes cupcakes with her grandma) but her views on astrology were just too unbelievable for me.  I couldn’t stand the way she handled choosing a relationship and sibling love triangles just kill me.16_600px

I would love to visit the faerie world in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series.  I loved the courts described in A Court of Mist and Fury way more than the Spring Court.  I took a quiz yesterday which said that I would belong in the Autumn Court which we haven’t yet seen in the books but it’s the place I would chose to live if I resided in the world.  I just want to stroll through fall foliage, drink pumpkin spiced lattes and wear chunky scarves and boots and perpetually celebrate Halloween and Christmas.17_600px

Don’t worry, no spoilers, but whoa!18_600px

I’m just going to leave this right here. *sobs indefinitely*19_600px

Everything about this series is pure perfection.  I see so very many re-reads in my future because I just need to live here forever with the Aglionby Raven boys.

5 Fandom Friday: Fandom Habits + July Photo Challenge

5 Fandom Friday is a weekly meme hosted by yours truly and Megan of The Nerdy Girlie!  For more information, here’s our introduction post about how 5FF came into being.

1) Matching Editions – I cannot even handle when the publisher changes the cover aesthetic of a book series (see The Winner’s Kiss rant which was thankfully rectified), or the height of a series that’s currently in the process of being published.  I ended up getting rid of my Selection series paperbacks because the final book is slightly shorter than the first two books. WHYYYYY. I have no idea why this is done or why anyone thinks this could ever be a good idea.  Just give me my matching series and change future editions if necessary! This is the only instance that I cannot handle change in.

Screen Shot 2016-06-24 at 6.07.03 AM

2) Preordering – One of my favorite things ever is being able to preorder books and films via Amazon.  They have a preorder price guarantee so if an item is ever priced lower between the date you placed your order and the date it ships, Amazon will refund you that money.  And you don’t even have to keep track of it.  Their handy algorithms do all the work.  They’re also really easy to cancel (which I will do if a bookstore near me is having an author event I want to attend so I can buy the book there to support the store).  I also love perusing my “Open Orders” tab to see all the things that I can expect to arrive in the future.  I seriously check several times per week (despite also having release dates written in my planner).  I can’t help it, it’s a habit and I find it to be enjoyable!

Screen Shot 2016-06-24 at 6.10.50 AM

3) Rearranging My Shelves – Whenever I get a new book or movie or collectible, the thing I look most forward to is incorporating it into my shelves. It’s kind of like having a life size puzzle to figure out (especially since I’m forever running out of space and I may need to start rotating some things seasonally).

Screen Shot 2016-06-24 at 6.04.32 AM

4) Reading Comics – One of the most difficult things about being a comic book reader is wanting to start everything from the beginning (especially when it comes to out of print comics since I refuse to buy comics digitally even though I probably should).  There are so many different continuity lines to follow and companies are constantly changing which stories are canon and which are separate.  It’s kind of a huge chore to follow but it’s one I take pride in knowing.  It’s definitely my most time consuming fandom habit and I haven’t been as on top of things lately because of general lack of interest in newer titles but alas, I could never just pick up an issue and start reading. I need background and I need a #1 and the storyline preceding it if it’s relevant.

Screen Shot 2016-06-24 at 6.03.08 AM

5) Collecting – This habit is the biggest issue when it comes to having physical space.  I am such a collector at heart and once I get into something, I go all out.  For instance, I cannot just get one Harry Potter Funko, I need them all. The same goes for Disney’s Tsum Tsum’s, Nintendo’s Amiibos, YA books in general but especially series and my most recent addiction is Marvel Vinylmations.  My husband always jokes about we managed to find a huge apartment that almost isn’t big enough because of all the stuff I have. I just can’t help it!

July Photo Challenge

So yesterday Megan and I announced that 5 Fandom Friday is being overtaken by Potter Month in July! We’re both so excited to be returning to Hogwarts and showing our wizarding appreciation<3 (If you haven’t read the introduction post yet, you can do so here!)  One thing that many people have been asking us about is if we’re going to be hosting another Instagram challenge so we’re happy to announce that we’re doing another this July but we’re changing things up! Instead of a daily photo challenge, we’re switching over to a weekly format.  We feel it’ll be much easier to keep up with the challenge if you’re only aiming to post a minimum of one photo per week (although you’re totally welcome to post as many as you’d like to if you get creative and interpret the topic in multiple ways!)  So we hope you’ll also join in this fun and without further ado, here are our photo challenge topics!

5FF: Potter Month Celebration & Link-Up!

Magic is in the air! Each day we’re drawing closer and closer to the release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child where we’ll get a closer look at what Harry, Ron, Hermione and Draco have been up to for the past 19 years (even though the story will focus primarily on their offspring).  Megan and I wanted to host a blog event worthy of one of our favorite fandoms so we decided to declare July POTTER MONTH and make it a month long celebration.  Potter Month is going to replace 5 Fandom Friday for July!  We’re encouraging everyone to post as many NEW wizarding posts as they see fit to spread wizard love in the blogosphere<3  Unlike 5 Fandom Friday, we’re not going to give you a specific topics to follow because we want everyone to be creative! Here’s a list of post ideas to you get you started: sorting non-HP characters into Hogwarts houses, magical outfits of the day, Harry Potter ships, House pride, re-read or re-watch thoughts, thoughts on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child excited? not excited?, etc.  I can’t wait to see what everyone will come up with! We’re also going to have a link-up go live on July 1st when Potter month kicks off so you can link your posts for all to see! The link up will last through August 1st.  Below are some guidelines if you’d like to participate.

Potter Month

The link up will run from July 1st to August 1st for all NEW Harry Potter themed blog posts.  If you link to old posts, we will be deleting it (and we will be checking).  The link up can be found HERE and in Megan’s post beginning on July 1st.  And if you’re posting on social media, you can use the hashtag #PotterMonth!

Please use the below format when linking:

Blog Post Title – Your Name @ Your Blog Name

ie. For my kick-off post, I would type:

Potter Month Celebration & Link-Up – Kristin @ Super Space Chick

Don’t forget to check back here throughout the month to see what your fellow Potter fans are up to!
