TTT: Top 10 Graphic Novels & Manga on my TBR

Top Ten Tuesday’s are a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish in which anyone who participates creates a Top Ten list of books based on a weekly prompt they provide (the list for advance topics can be found by clicking the link above).

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is graphic novels and comics so I decided to include manga as well! It’s been a while since I’ve done a comics post on my blog so I’m excited to be putting together this one today.  In recent years, I’ve found myself gravitating away from the toxicity of the comics industry in favor of full length novels and manga.  There were a bunch of personal experiences with creators that turned me off to comics in general which breaks my heart because I love the medium dearly but I think it’s helped me identify the stories that are right for me.  My comics and graphic novels TBR is much shorter than it ever has been but I’m genuinely thrilled for all the books I have to look forward to.  Here they are!

  1. Archie Volume Two by Mark Waid and Veronica Fish – I LOVED the first volume of the rebooted Archie and I picked up the second volume as soon as it was released but I have yet to read it.  Last week I watched Riverdale and it really sparked my interest in continuing the series ASAP!
  2. Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat Volume 2: Don’t Stop Me’ow by Kate Leth and Brittney L. Williams – Patsy Walker is probably my current favorite Marvel superhero (yes, even more than Spider-Gwen!).  I really loved the first volume from Patsy’s sass to the trendy clothes and the inclusion of She-Hulk and I can’t wait to dive into volume 2!
  3. Phonogram by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie – I’ve been meaning to read this one for years.  I love Gillen and McKelvie collectively as a creative team (Young Avengers is like, my favorite thing ever) and I’m so curious about this one of their earlier works! I love that it centers around music and I really need to read it already.
  4. The Wicked + The Divine Volume 2: Fandemonium by Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie – See, here they are again. I loved the artwork and the unique story concept in the first volume but I haven’t gotten to volume 2 just yet. Must rectify!
  5.  &  6. Giant Days Volumes 2 & 3 by John Allison & Lissa Treiman – I wish there were more titles out there like Giant Days! It’s a slice of life story following three very different roommates during college.  Each character is completely lovable in their own way and I can never chose a favorite because I love them all so much!

7. Fruits Basket Volume 2 by Natsuki Takaya – I loved this anime and I read the first volume when it was released.  Thankfully, these beautiful collector’s editions of Fruits Basket have been released so rapidly! I honestly can’t keep up with how often each new volume debuts but there are no complaints here! I actually have volumes 2-8 currently sitting unread on my shelf and the 9th should be coming out shortly!

8. Princess Jellyfish Volume 3 by Akiko Higashimura – This is one of my favorite manga series that’s finally being released in the U.S.! I devoured the first two volumes but I haven’t yet read the 3rd. I’m actually having the opposite issue of Fruits Basket, I hate not having another volume to look forward to once I finish so I’m saving it for closer to when volume 4 comes out!

9. Komomo Confiserie Volume 3 by Maki Minami – This manga is so much fun.  It’s honestly not the best story but I’m completely in love with the illustrations.  I didn’t get really into it until the end of the second volume, but I love the dresses and pastries and it’s only 5 volumes so I’m planning on finishing up soon.

10. Yamada-Kun and the Seven Witches Volume 8 by Miki Yoshikawa – I basically inhaled volumes 1-7 of this series! I swear I never binge read a manga series so fast in my life but I loved the characters and the concept of this unusual story.  I took a short break since I didn’t have too many volumes left to read but now I’ve got 8-12 calling to me!

News & Stuff #4: NYCC Edition

Last weekend I was one of the chosen ones who were able to acquire an NYCC 4-day pass so that is where I spent my days!  There was so much exciting news that came out of New York Comic Con that I wanted to make a video to share some of my favorite upcoming things.  One thing I forgot to include in my video is that VIZ Media is coming out with a Pokemon art book! I cannot wait.  Gimme all the Pokemon things.  Also is it Sun & Moon release day yet?! Anyway, I think Marvel was the clear news winner at NYCC this year but I’m also super excited about the new Shoujo manga that Kodansha got licenses for.  What are you most looking forward to?

Baltimore Comic Con: The Cosplay

Baltimore Comic Con was a blast (as always!).  If you haven’t already, you can watch my vlog of the con as well as my haul which I posted on my YouTube channel earlier in the week.  One of my favorite parts of the convention is admiring all of the wonderful cosplay that you see while walking around the exhibit hall, so today I’m sharing some of my favorites from this year’s show.  Saturday was the costume contest so I definitely saw the best cosplay that day and I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with how many adorable kids I saw in cosplay this con!  I think my favorites of the bunch are the Saga cosplayers, Cecil from Welcome to Night Vale, Hawkgirl and the Spider-Men cosplay group!  Which are your favorites?

Baltimore Comic Con: Vlog & Haul

Over Labor Day weekend, Andrew and I woke up at 3 AM to start our journey to Baltimore to attend my all time favorite convention, Baltimore Comic Con.  It’s been two years since I’ve been able to go and it was so great to be back!  The reason I love Baltimore so very much is that the main emphasis of the show is on comics and it’s evident of that focus when you look at the guest list each year.  They always manage to book the top writers and artists in the industry and it’s a pleasure to spend time on their show floor.  It’s not like SDCC or NYCC where walking from one end of the convention to the other end is an unbearable feat that requires you to set aside at least 30 minutes for.  And on the day of the costume contest, they always have some amazing cosplayers!  Admittedly, the show was a bit quieter this year after having been moved to Labor Day Weekend because Baltimore Comic Con was competing with 8 other conventions.  I still had a wonderful time and I fully expect to attend again next year when the date gets pushed back later in the month.  A major plus of the convention is that it’s right near the beautiful Barnes & Noble in the inner harbor which is totally worth a trip to.  Anyway, here’s the footage of our trip and my video of the treasures I acquired.

The Collectible Corner: Recent Wish List

In the past couple of weeks while I was away for my honeymoon, I came across so many new collectibles and toys that I immediately added to my wish list! Some of them are SDCC exclusives (Katana, Vanellope & Green Goblin), another is going to be super hard to acquire because it’s only being released in Japan (Kiki) and others have a long wait until their release (Wonder Girl & Catwoman) but nevertheless, I will continue swooning over photos of them until I can make them mine! You can view the full set on Polyvore and find out where everything below is from.  What’s on your current wish list?

5 Fandom Friday: Fandom Habits + July Photo Challenge

5 Fandom Friday is a weekly meme hosted by yours truly and Megan of The Nerdy Girlie!  For more information, here’s our introduction post about how 5FF came into being.

1) Matching Editions – I cannot even handle when the publisher changes the cover aesthetic of a book series (see The Winner’s Kiss rant which was thankfully rectified), or the height of a series that’s currently in the process of being published.  I ended up getting rid of my Selection series paperbacks because the final book is slightly shorter than the first two books. WHYYYYY. I have no idea why this is done or why anyone thinks this could ever be a good idea.  Just give me my matching series and change future editions if necessary! This is the only instance that I cannot handle change in.

Screen Shot 2016-06-24 at 6.07.03 AM

2) Preordering – One of my favorite things ever is being able to preorder books and films via Amazon.  They have a preorder price guarantee so if an item is ever priced lower between the date you placed your order and the date it ships, Amazon will refund you that money.  And you don’t even have to keep track of it.  Their handy algorithms do all the work.  They’re also really easy to cancel (which I will do if a bookstore near me is having an author event I want to attend so I can buy the book there to support the store).  I also love perusing my “Open Orders” tab to see all the things that I can expect to arrive in the future.  I seriously check several times per week (despite also having release dates written in my planner).  I can’t help it, it’s a habit and I find it to be enjoyable!

3) Rearranging My Shelves – Whenever I get a new book or movie or collectible, the thing I look most forward to is incorporating it into my shelves. It’s kind of like having a life size puzzle to figure out (especially since I’m forever running out of space and I may need to start rotating some things seasonally).

Screen Shot 2016-06-24 at 6.04.32 AM

4) Reading Comics – One of the most difficult things about being a comic book reader is wanting to start everything from the beginning (especially when it comes to out of print comics since I refuse to buy comics digitally even though I probably should).  There are so many different continuity lines to follow and companies are constantly changing which stories are canon and which are separate.  It’s kind of a huge chore to follow but it’s one I take pride in knowing.  It’s definitely my most time consuming fandom habit and I haven’t been as on top of things lately because of general lack of interest in newer titles but alas, I could never just pick up an issue and start reading. I need background and I need a #1 and the storyline preceding it if it’s relevant.

Screen Shot 2016-06-24 at 6.03.08 AM

5) Collecting – This habit is the biggest issue when it comes to having physical space.  I am such a collector at heart and once I get into something, I go all out.  For instance, I cannot just get one Harry Potter Funko, I need them all. The same goes for Disney’s Tsum Tsum’s, Nintendo’s Amiibos, YA books in general but especially series and my most recent addiction is Marvel Vinylmations.  My husband always jokes about we managed to find a huge apartment that almost isn’t big enough because of all the stuff I have. I just can’t help it!

July Photo Challenge

So yesterday Megan and I announced that 5 Fandom Friday is being overtaken by Potter Month in July! We’re both so excited to be returning to Hogwarts and showing our wizarding appreciation<3 (If you haven’t read the introduction post yet, you can do so here!)  One thing that many people have been asking us about is if we’re going to be hosting another Instagram challenge so we’re happy to announce that we’re doing another this July but we’re changing things up! Instead of a daily photo challenge, we’re switching over to a weekly format.  We feel it’ll be much easier to keep up with the challenge if you’re only aiming to post a minimum of one photo per week (although you’re totally welcome to post as many as you’d like to if you get creative and interpret the topic in multiple ways!)  So we hope you’ll also join in this fun and without further ado, here are our photo challenge topics!

EternalCon: The Cosplay

Last weekend, Andrew, Kelly and I met up to attend EternalCon on Long Island.  It’s still a relatively new convention (this being it’s 4th year) and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun we had.  The floor was full of exhibitors and cosplayers and everyone seemed to be in good spirits.  I love that there’s a local convention that’s so easy to get to and I’m definitely planning on going back next year.  Here are some photos of some of the best cosplay I saw at the show.  An EternalCon vlog with con footage and our purchases is coming next week!

Art Gallery: Anime ‘Captain America: Civil War’

If there was ever a mash up that I didn’t know I needed, it’s this Anime version of Captain America: Civil War.  I obviously loved the live action film wholeheartedly (I’m having trouble ranking my favorite Marvel films but it definitely sits within the top two spots for me) and anime, especially the animation and art style are up there in my favorite art styles so this mash up really speaks to me! All of the artwork is done by Bin1 Production and it mashes Captain America: Civil War with The Idolmaster.  There are mild Civil War spoilers in the artwork so beware if you haven’t seen it yet.  My favorite character drawn below is the female version of Spider-Man holding Cap’s shield<3

5 Fandom Friday: My Favorite Places To Read

5 Fandom Friday is a weekly meme hosted by yours truly and Megan of The Nerdy Girlie!  For more information, here’s our introduction post about how 5FF came into being.

This week’s 5 Fandom Friday topic is our favorite places to read.  As I’m sitting here in our Little Mermaid shell bed at Disney, the first place that came to my mind is vacation… until I realized that I’ve read a whopping 30 pages in the past two weeks so I had to amend my answers.  I usually read A LOT but things have been so crazy with the wedding and now the honeymoon that I’ve taken a bit of a break but once I get back to NY, I can’t wait to resume my reading in these places!

Screen Shot 2016-06-03 at 10.36.00 AM1) In front of my comic bookshelves on Andrew and I’s super comfy couch that we bought without ever sitting on.  We got really lucky but we could just tell from the photo that it had to be the most comfortable couch ever!

Screen Shot 2016-06-03 at 10.36.51 AM

2) In Andrew and I’s bed! Ever since I was little, reading in bed has been my favorite place of all to relax and get lost in a good story.

Screen Shot 2016-06-03 at 10.40.45 AM

3) My bed at my parent’s house.  Like I said, this has been my longtime favorite and I know I’ll still love to read there when I stay over (especially in the morning because I’m ALWAYS the first one awake)!Screen Shot 2016-06-03 at 10.42.11 AM

4) Outside in the springtime.  I love admiring the Cherry Blossom trees and spending time outside before it gets unbearably hot. I’m so happy to have a backyard again so I can enjoy the outdoors in the private.

Screen Shot 2016-06-03 at 10.54.11 AM

5) And lastly, which is the place I read more than any other, is on the train when I’m commuting to and from work.  I love reading on trains (and planes!) because it’s such a great chunk of uninterrupted reading time.

Heart separator

I hope you’ll be sharing your favorite places this week! And if you want to participate in future 5FF’s, you can find the rest of the June topics listed here :-)

Outfit of the Day: Spider-Gwen

These are some photos that I took (and edited) last fall but I still hadn’t posted for some reason unbeknownst to me (actually now that I’m thinking of it, I took these photos the day of Melissa’s going away party when she moved back to Texas T.T).  Since my second tpb of Spider-Gwen arrived yesterday I thought I would get on releasing these<3 I think everyone knows that Spider-Gwen is essentially my comic dream come true (thanks again Dan!) so I’ve purchased just about every Spider-Gwen article of clothing that WeLoveFine has had to offer.  Even more exciting is that completely out of nowhere, my friend Eric asked for my address because he had a surprise for me… custom painted Spider-Gwen converse sneakers!!!!  I was DYING when he sent me photos of them and I couldn’t believe how lucky I was that he thought of me!  Each side of the shoes has a different design and I love them so much! To be honest, I’m super scared to wear them unless it’s a REALLY special occasion because I would be DEVASTATED if anything were to happen to them! I love that Eric even went so far as to customize the box!  I decided to put together this everyday outfit complete with a Gwen Stacy headband and show off my best web hands.  In other news, today is my first official day off for my wedding! I have some last minute appointments today and some crafting stuff to take care of and then I’ll be rewarding myself with a hot cup of tea while I savor every page of DC Rebirth!
