‘Tis the Season: Ugly Christmas Sweater Party

This past weekend Andrew and I attended an ugly Christmas sweater party at our friend’s Erika and Alex’s apartment and it was so much fun! I’ve always wanted to attend one of these for as long as I can remember and the fact that it took place on SantaCon weekend as an anti-SantaCon Christmas gathering made it even better! There were so many festive treats (Erika made the most amazing sangria I have ever tasted- it was literally Christmas in a cup), there were ugly Christmas sweater cookies that were bigger than my head, and a plethora of other Christmas cookies! We also had a contest and Andrew ended up winning for ugliest Christmas sweater! I voted for our friend Gil because I love Christmas sweaters and I thought her’s was the cutest!  We also took a bunch of group photos and it was just so nice to relax near a gorgeous Christmas tree with good company ^.^

‘Tis the Season: We’re All Decorated for Christmas!

This Christmas is a really special one because it’s Andrew and I’s first married Christmas in our very own apartment with no roommates.  As you’re all probably aware, Christmas is a ~big deal~ to me so I’ve been extra looking forward to this one.  It was honestly even more exciting than I imagined it would be to decide upon on Christmas decor and pick out the decorations that spoke to my heart the most!  Since this is our first Christmas, we aren’t bogged down with sentimental ornaments from years past and while I expect that we will inevitably add some of those to our collection as the years pass, I’m so excited to have a fresh start and a tree that I completely love every ornament on.  I always enjoyed my parent’s decorations but I could definitely do without the sports, cars and Elvis ornaments.  I was adamant about putting our tree up as soon as possible because I want to enjoy the season to the fullest.  Before my mini vacation, I took to reading before work in our living room while sipping a cup of hot chai and now I’ll be able to do that beside a twinkling tree and it’s just delightful!  Plus, I’ve fallen in love with my apartment after using the KonMari method (post about that coming next week!).  Anyway, here’s our tree, our table and our stockings! Have you decorated for Christmas yet?

‘Tis the Season: Christmas Aesthetic

As you probably remember, Christmas is my favorite time of the year.  I basically spend every day after my birthday counting down for Halloween to be over because once November 1st hits, people start accepting my Christmas spirit (except for a couple of Thanksgiving enthusiasts who I will fight *I’m looking at you Kelly*).  This year is extra special because it’s Andrew and I’s first Christmas together in our own apartment so we get to start building our very own decor.  We’re planning on going to Target next weekend, picking up our choices and D E C O R A T I N G !  Obviously this meant that I spent about 4 hours looking at ever single Christmas item in every single Christmas category on the Target website.  Since I wanted so much (shocking, I know), I created a Christmas registry so I could easily reference it while we’re in the store and I was able to narrow down the things I think we need a bit.  I put together a Polyvore set of some of my favorite items because nothing makes me happier than publishing Christmas themed blog posts or YouTube videos.  Last year I did 25 days of Christmas blogging which I don’t *think* I’ll be able to manage this year but I am sure as heck going to try.  Enjoy and be merry!

‘Tis the Season: Rolfs in NYC

One of my most recent Christmas season traditions is to visit (and preferably eat at but I’ll get to that in a minute) at Rolfs in NYC.  It’s a German restaurant that draws a huge crowd of Christmas enthusiasts because upon entering you may think that Christmas has exploded inside.  It’s honestly breathtaking.  Andrew and I went last year and even though we waited in the cold for hours our experience was definitely worth it.  This year, we were joined by my brother Bob and while overall, we did have a lot of fun, it became clear just how mismanaged Rolf’s busiest season can be.

We waited on a line outside for about a half an hour only to find out that they weren’t taking table reservations until you got to the front of it.  We put our names down and crowded into the already overcrowded bar to enjoy a warm glass of gluhwein while we waited for our table.  We spent about 3 hours inside squished at the bar and maybe one table was called in that time (with zero effort put forth by the host to find the people called).  We found out that 10PM is their last seating so at 9PM when there were still 7 people ahead of us on the list we decided to bow out and eat some junk food at Penn Station on our way home instead.

I would suggest dropping in for one drink at the bar if you love Christmas as much as I do.  The drinks are overpriced, the restaurant is overcrowded, the staff is pretty obnoxious and walks away from anyone asking them questions but the decorations, quality of their gluhwein and the company you bring with you can still make it an enjoyable experience.  I really loved the potato pancakes I ate there last year and I’m thinking that I may take a day off of work so I can be at 4PM there when they open for my 2016 trip because I cannot picture willingly going in for a repeat of this year.  The only exception would be if I went in with the mindset that I would be having one drink and then leaving.

‘Tis the Season: Disney x Christmas Movie Mash Up Art

Yesterday while surfing the internet I came across the cutest Disney Christmas artwork by Dylan Bonner and I knew I had to share them here!  He took Disney characters and drew them in scenes of popular Christmas films which is basically my dream mash up.  Of course Home Alone Rapunzel and Elf Ariel, and Polar Express Peter Pan are my three favorites!

‘Tis the Season: Penguin Christmas Classics

I’ve recently fallen in love with the Penguin Christmas Classics collection of books so I wanted to share them with all of you in case you haven’t seen them on the shelves in your local bookstore!  The line collects a bunch of classic Christmas stories into these beautiful festive editions.  They have red spines with white typography and the covers feature cardinals and are primarily white, gold, green and grey.  The collection includes six books in total:

The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus by Frank L. Baum

A Merry Christmas: And Other Christmas Stories Louisa May Alcott

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

The Nutcracker by E. T. A. Hoffman

Christmas at Thompson Hall: And Other Christmas Stories by Anthony Trollope

The Night Before Christmas by Nikolai Gogol

So far I’ve gotten four of the six but I want to complete my set.  They seem like the perfect coffee table books to decorate with during the holidays and of course, read from while sitting in a cozy armchair!

‘Tis the Season: Bath & Body Works Holiday Candle Haul

This year I treated myself to an array of candles from Bath and Body Works when they were holding an irresistible sale on 3-wick styles.  I had a whole plan to film an over the top candle haul, possibly dressed as Professor Trelawney, so I could start telling people that I’ve dabbled in candle vlogging (because Scream Queens made that too funny).  Alas, the holidays are almost upon us and the one thing that’s always lacking during this season is time so a blog post is what I’m posting instead.  My family and I have been using the Fresh Balsam candle every chance we get because it smells exactly like a Christmas tree and it makes it so enjoyable to smell while sitting in front of our faux tree.  I also picked up Spiced Apple Toddy which smells like apple cider with a little kick to it, Vanilla Snowflake whose aroma smells almost exactly like a vanilla cupcake, and Twisted Peppermint because I adore mint everything.  What are some of your favorite candles?  I’ve recently become more interested in candles now that I’m thinking a lot about my future home.  I’ve never been able to enjoy the ambiance they create in my own room because I have so many books that burning a candle would be a major fire hazard!
