Classic Books on my Must Read List

My reading habits have vastly changed in the past couple of years as I’ve been being more thoughtful about which books I choose to consume.  One very important goal for me is to continue my trend of reading at least one classic book per month.  Sometimes classics can be tough to get through (fortunately I haven’t run into that issue with any of my recent reads), but I always feel so accomplished once I’m through. I think there’s something special about the longevity of classics and their appeal in the current day and age.  While technology may change, many of the fundamental issues and interpersonal relationships classic characters face have remained the same.  It’s fascinating to know that a character like Anne of Green Gables is just as concerned about her family as I am or that a character like Jane Eyre is looking for more in life than her society deemed appropriate for women.  I love getting into their head-spaces and joining them on their journeys to overcoming obstacles.  Plus the writing always has a delicious flare that’s hard to come by in modern literature.  Here are some of the next classics I plan on reading. Books on my List

Pride & Prejudice – Pride & Prejudice is the number one classic on my TBR list! I’ve been wanting to read this one ever since I saw and loved The Lizzie Bennett Diaries and I even made it a 2017 goal to read it before the end of the year.  I’m planning on diving into it next week!
Jane Eyre – I immediately became interested in Jane Eyre when I heard that the namesake character portrays “a woman’s passionate search for a wider and richer life than Victorian society traditionally allowed.” Count me in!
Anne of Avonlea – I read Anne of Green Gables two months ago and I fell completely in love with Anne’s spirit, Green Gables and everything about this book! I’m planning on continuing the series as soon as possible because I found the first book to be so enjoyable!
We Have Always Lived in the Castle – All I know about this classic is that it’s very creepy! It follows a girl and her sister and their experiences living in a castle. I know there are murders and hostile villagers and I can’t wait to get this one!
The Woman in White – This book was actually recommended to me by one of my YouTube subscribers! I’ve since looked into and it and learned that it’s the first Victorian novel to combine Gothic Horror and psychological realism.
Dracula – I think everyone knows about Dracula, the original vampire that inspired so many of the paranormal literature that we’re familiar with today.  Funny story: my brother had to read Dracula during college and while he was writing a paper about it his roommates found a bat in their house and he got a nosebleed. We felt like it couldn’t be a coincidence!
A Little Princess – This is Alexa’s favorite classic and since she’s been so wonderful about reading my favorite books lately, I feel like I owe it to her to pick up her favorite!  I’ve heard that A Little Princess is a good winter read so I’m planning on making this my December classic.

  4. I want to read a lot of these as well. I don’t read classics for fun…ever. The last time I Read a classic was in high school, so it’s been a while. Although, I did read LOTR and The Hobbit. I don’t know if those count though :/

Excited to hear your thoughts on Jane Eyre and Pride & Prejudice. Have you only seen The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and no other adaptation?

I personally despise Dracula, but love vampires so I don’t know.

It shocks me that you didn’t have to read Dracula, Pride & Prejudice or Jane Eyre for school! They’re all great classics.
