Tea & Book Chat: Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson

I have no idea why it’s taken me so long to reads Morgan Matson’s Since You’ve Been Gone.  I was immediately drawn to the cover when I first saw it in bookstores last May because honestly, how could I not be?  It’s so summery and perfect and I love the heart shaped Lolita sunglasses and the fact that both girls are enjoying ice cream cones.  After a long winter of being engrossed in epic fantasy reads, the craving for a fun contemporary book finally hit once the sun started making some appearances in New York.  I’m so glad I chose to start with this book because I truly loved it and now I’m on a contemporary reading kick!

What I loved most about Since You’ve Been Gone is that the story is about friendship and self discovery and while there is a love aspect to it, it’s far from the main focus.  Sloane and Emily are best friends and they have an epic summer planned until one day Sloane just disappears without any explanation.  All that’s left in her wake is a list of things for Emily to do so she makes it her mission to complete them all (even the ones that sound near impossible) in the hopes that it’ll lead her back to Sloane.  When we’re first introduced to Emily she’s a quiet introvert who prefers to stay out of the spotlight.  She’s been living the past two years in Sloane’s shadow and now that she’s gone, Emily is forced to come out of her shell.  Through the course of the book she becomes more vocal about her own personal needs and wants and it’s so exciting to watch her evolve throughout the pages.

I also have to mention that in addition to the beautiful cove art, if you take the book jacket off of Since You’ve Been Gone you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise.  There’s even cover art on the inside of the book jacket!  It’s super appealing.  And lastly, here are some overall book thoughts: I was surprised at how long the chapters were (some were upwards of 40 pages) but I found myself flying through them nonetheless.  I really loved how I felt while reading this book.  It was such a fun summer read and I loved the playlists that Matson included.  I really related to Emily and for me, the story became so much more about her than her search for Sloane.

Final Thoughts: Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson is an incredibly fun summer read that’s all about friendship and self discovery.  It felt different than any YA I’ve previously read and I especially appreciated the playlists that are included throughout the story.  Plus, the cover and inside book jacket are major eye candy.

The Pre-Sloane Emily didn’t go to parties, she barely talked to guys, she didn’t do anything crazy. Enter Sloane, social tornado and the best kind of best friend—the one who yanks you out of your shell.

But right before what should have been an epic summer, Sloane just… disappears. No note. No calls. No texts. No Sloane. There’s just a random to-do list. On it, thirteen Sloane-selected-definitely-bizarre-tasks that Emily would never try… unless they could lead back to her best friend.

Apple Picking at Night? Okay, easy enough.

Dance until Dawn? Sure. Why not?

Kiss a Stranger? Um…

Getting through Sloane’s list would mean a lot of firsts. But Emily has this whole unexpected summer ahead of her, and the help of Frank Porter (totally unexpected) to check things off. Who knows what she’ll find?
